Description

Would it surprise you to learn that people with too much money are flocking to "IV bars" and paying hundreds of dollars for intravenous cocktails of vitamins that are supposed to treat every malady under the sun but do absolutely nothing except risk serious infection?

... It probably doesn't surprise you, does it? Yeah, us neither. God, that's depressing. Anyway, here's a podcast.

Karen Glazar: Most insurance will not cover “experimental” treatments, that’s why. There is very promising studies on ketamine for depression, but it is $400+ per session, and people require 4-6 sessions in a short period (a few weeks) and then follow ups (far less often). But if that huge fee up front saved me from my weekly therapy, numerous medications, doctors visits (all which have done next to nothing in 15+ years) then I would gladly pay it.

A friend is looking at getting a ketamine infusion at one of these places for depression. I told him not to, since they were charging $1700 and not taking insurance, it sounded scam-y to me. Is a ketamine infusion truly a treatment for refractory depression/bipolar? It sounded pretty sketchy.

farm wisdom, farm wisdom: Sometimes cows who have recently given birth have too much calcium going towards producing milk, which can ultimately cause their muscles to fail including the heart, a condition known as milk "fever". The main treatment is calcium through an iv since it must be replenished quickly, but slightly too quick and it can shock the heart. This happens on the vet show "the incredible dr pol" all the time.
