Scam Alert: Fake Government Texts
Update: 2025-12-06
Description
Barbara Jewell-Potter received suspicious texts claiming to be from healthcare.gov, urging her to create an account and select a healthcare plan. These messages, appearing legitimate with dot gov in the senders information, are part of a growing concern: scam messages impersonating official sources. In Washington state, the Federal Trade Commission reported nearly thirty thousand fraud cases in 2023, with government impersonation being the most common. Scammers often demand immediate payment for alleged wrongdoings, exploiting trust and emerging on social media platforms. To protect yourself, the Federal Trade Commission advises verifying the authenticity of any suspicious communication.
