Mind, Body, Spirit with Rob


In previous episodes, we’ve talked about how overall mental health encompasses ongoing wellness and happiness relating to emotional, psychological  and social well being.  In short, it’s all about the mind, body and spirit and keeping these three in balance with each other.  Today, we’re going to dive into this concept a bit more as it relates to real world experiences.   Rob is here with us today and he’s going to share some of his life events and how he was able to incorporate aspects of mind, body, spirit wellness to improve his overall being, situation and to help him work through the trauma of the life happenings.




High Level Model



  1. We are a 3 part being




    1. Spirit




      1. Our true essence



      2. Who we really are




    2. Mind




      1. Will



      2. Emotions



      3. Thoughts




        1. We HAVE thoughts, but we are not our thoughts





    3. Body




      1. Our physical selves



      2. 5 Senses





  2. These are distinct but not separate




    1. They interact with each other and manifest nurture/neglect in each other



    2. Nurturing each manifests positive results in the others





Practical Strategies



  1. Spirit




    1. Sit and listen to worship music and just let the music surround and wash over me



    2. Just sit quietly in His presence




      1. No need to strive or problem solve - just be



      2. In this place, I was unconditionally loved and “good enough”




    3. Scripture reading and daily devotion



    4. Writing my prayer requests



    5. Praying with friends



    6. Weekly church service




  2. Mind




    1. Journaling




      1. Writing down all I was going through put distance between me and what was happening



      2. Got everything out of my head so my mind wasn’t constantly and endlessly swirling it around




    2. Personal development books (physical/audio)



    3. Encouraging YouTube videos, audio lectures



    4. Daily check ins with my 3 “ride or die” friends




      1. What was going well/what wasn’t



      2. Could be honest when I felt like I’d taken 3 steps backwards




    5. Weekly therapy session




  3. Body




    1. Daily exercise




      1. Body Beast from Beach Body




    2. Meal planning - Food is fuel



    3. Take your meds!



    4. Crawl in bed and cry



    5. Clean up your space




      1. A tidy exterior helps my me have inner calm




    6. Sleep well



    7. All the spiritual, emotional, and physical nurturing helps this happen
