Description

Monday of the Second Week of Lent

March 18, 2019

Daily Reading from the USCCB: Psalm 79:8, 9, 11, 13

Today’s Responsorial Psalm is somewhat unusual. The body of the prayer is from one psalm while the refrain is from another. The two elements however, express one theme. They constitute a communal lament, perhaps for the destruction of the temple by the Babylonians in 587 B.C.

They also express a lament for the people’s sinfulness. We are all sinners, but we pray that our sinfulness will not become the basic element of our relationship with God. “Don’t deal with us exclusively as sinners. Pardon us. Deliver us. Liberate us.”

We all have reason to mourn. We all have cause for sadness. We are all in trouble with God. In these psalm verses we ask God to pardon our sins–to act consistently with His mercy.
