TikTok is one of the world’s most popular apps, and is known for its addictive algorithm and massive global user base, but it has faced ongoing privacy and safety concerns. Yesterday, results from a new joint investigation from Canada’s privacy authorities revealed that TikTok has been collecting sensitive data from Canadian children. The social media giant says it will improve its age-verification methods – but questions remain about how this data is being used and what it means for the millions of young Canadians scrolling through videos every day. CTV Tech analyst Carmi Levy spoke to Ken Connors.
