Ipswich residents are embracing the street library movement, with over 50 community-run libraries now operating across the city. Councillor Pye Augustine recently visited a Ripley street library to see how it had fared following ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred and was pleased to find it had survived the heavy rain unscathed.

“These little libraries are a fantastic initiative, providing books to those who may not always have easy access to our city libraries,” Councillor Pygostine said.

Street Libraries Popping Up Across Ipswich

Street libraries can now be found in Ripley, Flinders View, Karana Downs, Rosewood, Leichhardt, One Mile, Redbank Plains, and Springfield Lakes. Even Booval Fair Shopping Centre has set up a pop-up library to encourage community reading.

“There’s a real need for these libraries, and the community is making sure they thrive,” Councillor Pye Augustine added.

The initiative is community-driven, with residents donating and exchanging books in an honor system that ensures fresh reading material is always available.

Connecting Through Reading

The Ipswich and surrounds Street Libraries Facebook page helps residents find their nearest book exchange and showcases the creativity behind the colorful mini-libraries.

“Not only are these libraries practical, but they’re also beautifully decorated by the community, adding a splash of color and creativity to the streets,” said Councillor Pye Augustine.

She encourages residents to check out the Ipswich and Surrounds Street Libraries Facebook group and get involved by donating books.

A Love for Libraries—Big and Small

While street libraries provide convenient and local access to books, Councillor Pye Augustine reminds residents to also visit Ipswich City Council libraries, which offer a vast range of books, resources, and events for all ages.

“Anything that encourages reading and brings the community together is a great initiative,” she said.
