The 3 Biggest Plastic Surgery Mistakes

(And how to avoid them)

There are three major mistakes I see patients make when they are considering plastic surgery. The first is not taking advantage of the latest techniques and the most modern tools and technologies that are available to them. Just as in every other industry and walk of life, technology has dramatically impacted the field of cosmetic surgery over the past ten years.

The second major mistake is selecting a surgeon who isn t employing those leading- edge techniques and technologies. While many surgeons have done an excellent job of keeping up with improved technology, there are others who still complete procedures the same way they did 25 years ago. While this isn t necessarily bad, it diminishes your chances of getting the exact results you want. It is up to you, as the patient and consumer, to do your homework and make sure that you re selecting the right doctor for your needs and desires. I ll give you a few tips on how to do that in this chapter.

The third major mistake is not having a plan built around your specific needs and objectives. Often, multiple procedures can be performed simultaneously to maximize the total result while reducing costs and recovery time. Other procedures are best completed in a certain sequence to maximize results. Working with your surgeon to create an overall plan for what you want to eventually accomplish through plastic surgery will help ensure that you maximize the results you are seeking.

The field of cosmetic surgery is currently experiencing what I believe is a new age of amazing techniques, technologies and results. Selecting the right procedures, the right doctor, and having a comprehensive plan in place greatly increases the likelihood that you will be completely satisfied with your new look.

Mistake #1: Not Taking Advantage Of The Latest Technology

It would be impossible to list all of the latest technologies which have been introduced to the field of cosmetic surgery in recent years. Below are three examples I believe you should be aware of.

The first example is VASER, which stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. VASER is the latest innovation in liposuction and consists of a rod, called a cannula, that is 2 to 3 millimeters wide and between 12 and 18 inches long. It contains a unique generator that, when stroked through the tissues, vibrates so rapidly that it emits a sound so high it exists in the ultrasound frequencies, virtually undetectable to the human ear. By focusing these sound waves, the VASER device disrupts fat cells without damaging the encasing tissues. This means that the blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues are minimally affected.

A high-definition liposuction procedure using VASER begins with a tiny incision. The VASER cannula is inserted beneath the skin and pulled back and forth to disrupt the fat. You can think of the effects as similar to shaking grapes off a vine. The VASER doesn t melt the fat but instead emulsifies it. The fat is transformed into fat globulins which are very easily, and smoothly, removed. After the fat is disrupted, a modified form of liposuction is used to remove the fat with less pain, less swelling, a quicker recovery time, and almost always without any bleeding.

The most important aspect of the VASER, however, is the finished product. Traditional liposuction can result in contour irregularities, depressions, and inadequate removals. Although these are small irregularities in the grand scheme of things, they can be anything but minor in the eyes of the patient who expected to have a smooth result. Due to this, an unfortunate side effect of traditional liposuction techniques is that it isn t uncommon for the proc
