Part supernatural comedy, part mystery, and part history, with throughlines of philosophy, pathos, and wackiness, it concerns the afterlife adventures of the world’s most reknowned skeptic and debunker, who finds himself on a spiritual plane tasked with preventing a dark force from undoing all of existence. Along the way, Langley meets Albert Einstein, Tom Petty, a goofy president, a surly toddler, and his childhood hero / disgraced magician.   

This is the first novel by Jeff Giles, a pop culture writer whose work has appeared on Paste, Rotten Tomatoes, Ultimate Classic Rock, and Popdose. He’s the host of The Record Player podcast.   Jeff Giles has written about pop culture for Popdose, Ultimate Classic Rock, Paste, the Village Voice, and Rotten Tomatoes, hosts The Record Player podcast and is the author of the books Uncle John’s Beer-Topia and Llanview in the Afternoon: An Oral History of One Life to Live. He lives in New Hampshire with his family, and Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane is his first novel.
