Otherwise unpopulated, they discover the huge gun that shot them down sitting atop a trove of cultural artifacts from a bygone civilization. What harm could come of dismantling the gun and taking a few of the artifacts home with them?

A Great Science Fiction Short Story!!!
Philip K Dick scores with yet another excellent science fiction short story. While visiting a world ruined in the past by a nuclear war, the investigation team's space craft is damaged by a remotely fired gun located on the planet's surface. Will the visitors be able to repair their ship? Will they be able to avoid the fire of the remotely actuated gun, or are they doomed to stay forever on this ruined world? I encourage everyone to read this excellent story!!!
Very Early Sub Standard PK Dick
I'm not sure when this was written but I suspect it was very early. Its not really a book, just a short story. There is a surprise ending that you can see coming a mile away but since I'm guessing this was written in the 50's was somewhat imaginative then. Its an example of how writers like Dick have so fashioned the SF landscape that any thoughtful fan reading now can see the ending coming. So not great, if you aren't already a PK Dick fan don't get this start with his better short stories or with books like Eye in the Sky, Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Man in the High Tower, Zap Gun, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Ubik, etc. Still since its free it was a nice diversion and worth it for PK Dick fans like me who want to read everything the master wrote, good and not so good.
Defense at any cost
Intelligent life on a far away planet: unknown of until nuclear destruction announces its forfeited existence. Self-aware machinery protecting humanities treasures. Safe for whom? To what end?
Not the strongest of P.K. Dick's short stories, but it does voice a valid science fiction concern.
The Gun , by Phillip K. Dick
I enjoyed the book greatly. I appreciated the authors wry sense of humor. " There are none so blind as those who will not see."
They didn't even think about automatic repairs even though they must have them themselves. Or do they? No mention of automatic repairs are mentioned. Just that they had to do the repairs by hand. Something to think about.
I'm in Love with Philip K Dick now
I never liked reading as a child (or adult to be honest). But now that I have a kindle I'm reading voraciously. I came across all these public domain stories, mostly old classic sci-fi's that defined our parent's generation of space and explorations and curiosity. I love, love, love these short stories!
