The man with the Golden Arm was released in 1955 and directed by Otto Preminger. It was a hit with critics and at the box office. It was one of the first movies to take a serious look at drug addiction. It started Frank Sinatra, Eleanor Parker, and Kim Novak. With a screenplay written by Walter Newman and Lewis Meltzer and based on the 1949 book by Nelson Algren
