The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County (HCSCC) is pleased to announce a talk and slide show by two of the original crew members of the Hjemkomst voyage to Norway.
Paul Hesse and Mark Hilde were part of the original crew that sailed the Viking ship Hjemkomst to Norway more than 30 years ago. At the time, the return sail from east to west could not be realized. However, in the summer of 2014, Hesse and Hilde had the opportunity to complete an east-to-west voyage following the same North Atlantic path the Vikings sailed more than 1,000 years ago.
Hesse, who was the Hjemkomst navigator, and Hilde, the voyage cook, will share images of the trip which departed from Norway and went on to Iceland, Greenland and then North America, where it retraced the Hjemkomst’s voyage through the Great Lakes lock system to Bayfield, WI. The voyage was made on the 40-foot sailboardRaven, owned and skippered by Dean Rau of Bayfield, WI. Hesse’s son Eric, completed the four-person crew.
The presentation is free with museum admission: Adults $10, Seniors and College Students $9, Youth (5-17) $8, under 5 Free. HCSCC Members with a membership card are also admitted free.
