A novel with a lot of history
This is a beautiful and moving book giving an idea of what happened to the Armenians deported or fleeing from Turkey at the time of the First World War. Even if the story is tweaked by some coincidences, it is very well told. The subject matter is sad, and you may not get through the book without shedding a few tears. Five stars.

This story bounces between early 1900's to present day, Mariam and her great-granddaughter Katerina. When Mariam dies, Katerina inherits her old spice box, full of letters written in Armenian. Katerina visits Mariam's birth country to discover her heritage and answers to the letters. I loved the descriptive writing and could feel, see and smell, I was pleasantly dragged into the story.
" Heat steals up through the balls of my feet as I step across the tiled floor to observe the goings-on from the window. Men gather in the local café to drink miniature cups of grainy Greek coffee, thumbing tasseled worry beads. A butcher passes with a goat carcass slung across his shoulder. A gangly old man wheels a heavy cart along the potholed street, pausing outside the hotel, his croaky voice offering a minted yoghurt drink".
Definitely one of the better new books I've read this year. 4 stars.

Unbelievably Poignant!
Before reading this novel, I knew very little about the Armenian tragedy. This novel brings to life the heart-wrenching horrors and sufferings that took place in Turkey against the Armenian people. Despite all the horrors of war, a poignant story emerges of a young modern day woman who discovers her grandmother's wooden treasure box and the secrets that lie inside.
How can I describe the emotions I felt while reading? Heartbroken, stunned, sad, and even angry at the injustices. And this is the sign of a great book. When the reader is able to pull out and twist the reader's emotions and make them think hard upon history, this is a book worth reading! The story is built from the points of views of family members, both past and present. Interesting, poignant, and joyous - that's what this book is!
