The Unloaded Truth: Unpacking the Gun Violence Epidemic
Description
Gun violence is a national public health epidemic in America. Gun violence is widely recognized as a public health epidemic by many health organizations and experts.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Public Health Association (APHA), and other prominent health organizations have categorized gun violence as a public health crisis due to its widespread and devastating impacts on communities.
In this episode, I talk with Franck Adjisegbe of CT Against Gun Violence, Boomer Dewitt, a local rap artist, and Celina Staten, a local resident, mother, and my daughter.
Both Boomer and Celina have personally been affected by gun violence, as have I, so this episode is personal.
We'll talk about some of the root causes of gun violence specific to Black and Brown communities.
Some Statistics:
Gun violence is a leading cause of death in the United States, particularly among youth and young adults.
Firearm-related injuries, both fatal and non-fatal, have long-term physical, emotional, and financial consequences.
Ripple Effects on Communities:
The trauma caused by gun violence extends beyond victims to families, witnesses, and entire communities, contributing to mental health challenges such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
Preventable Nature:
Like other public health issues, gun violence is preventable through evidence-based strategies like firearm safety laws, community violence intervention programs, and addressing root causes like poverty and inequality.
Health Disparities:
Gun violence disproportionately affects marginalized communities, reflecting broader social and health inequities.
Impact on Healthcare Systems:
Gun-related injuries strain healthcare resources and result in significant medical costs, often borne by public systems.
We talk about all of this and more in this episode.
