In this episode of Panossonic UnCut, three guests from the “Disasterpiece” project joined us in Cyprus: Anna Maria from Italy representing ARES Sociale, Arianna from Spain representing Open Europe and Emily from Cyprus representing RESET. This EU Erasmus+ funded initiative empowers young people to view failure as a potential “masterpiece”, with the title cleverly combining the words “disaster” and “masterpiece” to show how setbacks can become valuable experiences.

Throughout the conversation, the guests described how theproject develops resources and tools to normalise failure, positioning it as a natural part of life and a learning opportunity. The initiative features case studies of everyday people, rather than just celebrities, who have overcomesignificant setbacks. The team is producing videos and podcasts to share these authentic stories and offer practical strategies, mainly for youth workers, educators, and professionals supporting young people.

The discussion also examined how different European cultures approach failure, focusing on contrasts between Southern and Northern mindsets when it comes to education, careers, and big life changes. The guests offered personal stories about failure, reinforcing the importance of questioning societal ideals of success, especially in a social media age that often displays only positive results. They emphasised that failure is subjective, universal, and that seeking help is always acceptable. The project website(disasterpiece.eu) features helpful resources, including case studies, and will soon include podcasts and additional materials.
