USING ALGORITHMS TO DRIVE ENGAGEMENT ON LINKEDIN
Description
So here we go, another blog from Debsie! Now I am getting into the swing of things… and dare I say I’m actually getting comfortable writing these blogs – but hold your horses, our Christina may be back in action next week – so hang in there!!!
I use Google a lot – but when it comes to marketing, mentoring and social media – I just ask Christina, and obviously, as you probably know, she’s not been on the best form just recently! So some extra stuff has been down to me… and as most of you know, I am the branding girl – not the social media, marketing, mentoring (maybe mischief) girl – that’s our C – so I’ve had to do some upskilling and here is my take on Algulrhythums! I mean, that’s how I spell it – google says: did you mean ‘algorithms’ (dip sh*t)? So now I get them, here’s my simple take home on algorithms – with a little sprinkling of humor, some light stats I stole and advice which I now understand from Christina on how to make the most of them (algorithms) on LinkedIn itself, which I feel I can expand on seeing as I’ve now posted on LinkedIn 3 times in my life!
So Let’s Talk About Algorithms (Yes, Even the LinkedIn One)
You’ve heard it a trillion times:
“The algorithm changed again!! My post only got 3 likes and one was from my mum.”
Yeah… the algorithm’s mood swings are real.
But what is an algorithm, really?
Simple Explanation: An algorithm is just a fancy word for a step-by-step process a computer follows to get something done. Like a to-do list:
- Wake up
- Make coffee
- Decide who sees your post (if you’re LinkedIn!)
- Ghost half your followers – sorry everyone! I love you really!
LinkedIn’s algorithm decides who sees what AND when; AND it changes more often than your childs’ favourite cartoon!
The light sprinkling of stats I mentioned above:
- Posts with images get 2x more engagement – your phone is already out – so use it to take a nice selfie!
- Posts with 18–25 words in the first line perform best (hello hook)
- LinkedIn favours meaningful comments over just likes (convo > claps)
- The first 60–90 minutes after posting are crucial for reach!!!! Oppps!
So, how do you “win” the algorithm?
Let’s break it down; like an algorithm would:
Step 1: Hook them FAST
Make your first line scroll-stopping. No fluff. Think “You won’t believe what happened during my interview…”
Step 2: Add REAL Value
Teach something, tell a story, or share a unique perspective. Algorithms love value because people love value.
Step 3: Engage
Reply to every comment (yes, even the “great post!” ones). Engagement signals = algorithm fuel.
Step 4: Consistency > Virality (yes, that’s a new word in my vocab!)
Showing up regularly (3–5x/week) builds trust. The algorithm notices patterns, so make a schedule.
Step 5: Format smartly
Use white space. Short sentences. No paragraphs that look like textbooks – like mine!
Final Thought:
To be honest – I don’t do any of the above, but the AMAZING TEAM at Green Umbrella do! So reach out for help and free up your time to do what you are best at!
And remember – the algorithm isn’t against you. It just wants to show people what they’re likely to care about.
Be real, be relevant, and be relentlessly helpful and the algorithm becomes your co-pilot.
If algorithms confuse you, just remember: It confuses everyone – apart from Christina! – but that they’re like toddlers! Moody, unpredictable, but always respond well to lots of attention and snacks (okay, maybe just attention in this case).
