Understanding ADHD: What Happens in the Brain?
Description
In this episode, I explain ADHD and its effects on the brain. Being an interior designer, what better way to do it that to use the analogy of designing a building or home? Like a building or home, ADHD requires a well-thought-out plan and we examine the intricacies of the brain and the individual experiences of those living with the disorder.
The prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive functions such as decision-making, problem-solving, and working memory, is one of the main areas of the brain affected by ADHD.
The basal ganglia, responsible for regulating movement and motivation, is also affected and can lead to hyperactivity and impulsivity symptoms.
To better manage ADHD, a holistic approach that addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of the disorder is key.
I encourage listeners to prioritize self-care and find strategies that work for them individually, such as exercise, mindfulness, and building structure and routine into daily life.
