The 2016 Purdue-Illinois contest was a back and forth game all afternoon. Separation finally came in overtime when struggling freshman kicker J.D. Dellinger hit a 28-yard field goal. The game-ending field goal gave the Boilermakers the 34-31 victory and brought The Canon trophy back to West Lafayette.
