We kicked things off with the latest on President Trump’s announcement that the U.S. will resume soybean sales to China — and in return, China will keep sending rare metals back to the U.S.
After breaking down the soybean market, the conversation moved to beef — since soybeans are used primarily for cattle feed. The Trump administration recently announced plans to import Argentinian beef in an effort to lower U.S. prices.
Pfaff, who serves on the state Agriculture Committee, explained why beef is so expensive, how the Argentinian imports might affect U.S. farms, and what Wisconsin could do to help farmers — especially given that the meatpacking industry is essentially monopolized.
The conversation then turned to PFAS, the so-called “forever chemicals.” Pfaff described the local scenario, where the Town of Campbell sends PFAS-contaminated water to La Crosse’s treatment plant, and how the resulting sludge ends up on farm fields, spreading PFAS throughout the environment.
