不少小伙伴听到 “as old as the hills” 这个表达可能会觉得奇怪，

“as…as” 是像……一样，“old” 是老的，“hills” 是山丘，

字面直译好像是 “像山一样老”。

但实际它是个非常地道且常用的比喻！

先来听一下它的英文解释：

In English, when you say something is as old as the hills, you're kind of saying that whatever you're talking about is as old as the earth, as old as the hills and valleys that we see around us.

在英语中，当你说某事与山一样古老时，你有点像是在说无论你在说什么都和地球一样古老，就像山丘一样古老和山谷我们在我们周围看到的。

这个短语的起源颇有渊源，

最早可追溯到宗教典籍《圣经·约伯记》第15章第7节。

不过它以现在的固定形式“as old as the hills”流行开来，是在18世纪之后。

1734年弗朗西斯·哈钦森的著作《为古代历史学家辩护》中首次明确使用该表述，

19世纪后更是被马克·吐温等知名作家在作品中引用，

逐渐成为英语中描述“古老”的常用习语，沿用至今。

She comes from a family as old as the hills.

她来自一个历史悠久的家族（有着古老传承的家族）。

This tradition is as old as the hills and has been passed down for centuries.

“As old as the hills”

This phrase is used to describe something that is extremely old, ancient, or has existed for a very long time. The hills are used as a metaphor because they have been on Earth for millennia.

这个短语用来形容极其古老、历史悠久或存在了很久的事物。用“山”来比喻，是因为山已经存在于地球上数百万年了。

翻译成中文有 “历史悠久、年代久远、老掉牙了、陈年老套” 的意思。

常用于形容事物、观念、笑话或习俗非常古老。
