Description

Musings of a Third Culture Polyglot - Learn English through the medium of... well, English, taught by someone who learned it from scratch and now teaches (ironically!) American native speakers how to use their own language. This podcast will mix Japanese, Korean, and English to bring you a unique look at the phenomenon that is language and communication. In the process, I will invite you to step out into new horizons and not just grow in your English abilities, but also towards making your life goals a reality. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-UayEfyI_KzmvWTy_aroIA

One of the most beautiful aspects of acquiring a new language is unlocking the new culture that comes with it. However, this new culture can clash with your native culture. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but forewarned is forearmed. Good luck! 頑張って! 화이팅!Send in your questions to jpenacademy@gmail.comSupport the show

What do you say when someone passes away? This is an inevitable situation in life—both for ourselves and those around us. Each culture has its own way to express condolences. In today’s episode, we’ll explore what to say—and not to say—in English when someone passes. The expression is easy enough, but mind the tone and approach.Good luck! 頑張って! 화이팅!Send in your questions to jpenacademy@gmail.comSupport the show

We all have times when we struggle with motivation. Motivation “experts” are everywhere—at least here in the US—and so are motivation hacks, whether it be music to get us amped up or movies to inspire us. But at the end of the day, all of these things will fail us. We can’t rely on these temporary tactics or feelings to carry us through to our goals. No matter how you slice it, you have to just find a way to get there. This isn’t necessarily an encouraging word, but it’s the truth. Motivation is overrated, execution is key!Good luck! 頑張って! 화이팅!Send in your questions to jpenacademy@gmail.comSupport the show
Everyone focuses on speaking English and how to get expressions right. This leads to frequently asking natives if a particular expression is correct. But learning expression by expression in an isolated way wastes a ton of time. Good news! There is an aspect of English learning that, if you learn well, can help you form solid foundation to be able to answer those questions yourself. You can then have your own accurate gauge as to what is “right” and wrong. In fact, I would attribute a lot of my leveling up in English to working hard at this one craft. Don’t overlook this aspect of the English language, and get started on drastic English improvement today! Hope you enjoy the episode.Good luck! 頑張って! 화이팅! Send in your questions to jpenacademy@gmail.comSupport the show

Here are the top five questions I receive regarding English learning. Some questions are better than others, but I answer in as direct a way as possible so that you can be on your way to effective English learning. If you can implement all of these responses, you should be able to improve your English significantly. What in the world are these young people saying? Join me as we take a dive into the world of English (technically American) slang. I will teach you five slangs you can start using immediately, and five important notes to keep in mind when using slangs. Armed with this knowledge, you too can sound like Drake (but not really). Good luck! 頑張って! 화이팅!Send in your questions to jpenacademy@gmail.comSupport the show
Some sounds in English are notoriously difficult to pronounce. But be assured—English speakers struggle just as much, if not more, trying to sound out words in your language! Knowing this, be encouraged, and don’t worry too much about how you sound. Instead, feel free to make a ton of mistakes and enjoy the learning process. Whether you’re learning English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, or any other language for that matter, we’re all in the same boat.  Good luck! 頑張って! 화이팅! Send in your questions to jpenacademy@gmail.comSupport the show
By far the number one question I get regarding learning English is “How do I get good at English?” In this episode I’ll give you the definitive answer once and for all. Good luck! 頑張って! 화이팅!Send in your questions to jpenacademy@gmail.comSupport the show
Welcome to the first episode of Jpenacademy. In this episode (and what follows), I will be using a combination of English, Japanese, and Korean to teach English. But in so doing, I will attempt to open up your horizon to what is possible through language and communication. Whether you just started on this journey or have been walking for a while towards English fluency, I hope you can find encouragement through this podcast to keep going!  For this episode, we’ll start with greetings. Saying "hello" is the first step in communication. Go beyond the formal ways to say "hi," and dive into freer expressions. In this episode, I will teach you various greetings beyond what the textbooks say and will encourage you to come up with your own unique greetings in English. Good luck! 頑張って! 화이팅! Send in your questions to jpenacademy@gmail.comSupport the show

Let’s admit it: we fear a lot when it comes to learning English. One fear is how others will view us. Well, in this episode, I share a story of encountering an American bully (but maybe not that serious in reality). I'm glad to report that I survived and came out on top! You can too.Good luck! 頑張って! 화이팅! Send in your questions to jpenacademy@gmail.comSupport the show
