Description

Here we explore the fascinating world of nutrition and delve into topics such as Intuitive Eating, health psychology, weight cycling, dieting, mindfulness, self-trust, and more.

In each episode, we engage in thought-provoking discussions that may touch upon sensitive subjects like food, weight, and body image. It's important to note that our podcast is not intended to replace personalized nutrition counseling or mental health therapy. Instead, it serves as a valuable supplement to those services, offering a unique perspective and insight into the complexities of healthy eating.

*We recommend listening to part 1 before this episode for a better understanding of the concepts discussed Insecure attachment isn't exclusively a result of your childhood.. We're all becoming a little more insecurely attached and my hope is that in listening to this episode you can feel more comfortable with your discomfort around your peers, seek connection, and heal in community. That said, diet culture IS conducive to community. In other words, we feel we relate to others when we complain about our weight, discuss new diets, and encourage each other to workout. This obviously has its faults, and those who have been harmed by diet culture are desperate for new ways to connect. If this is you, I recommend starting with nutrition counseling and/or eating disorder-informed therapy to become more confident in a non-diet lifestyle so that you don't feel the need to use diet talk as a way to relate to others. A great place to get support is with Vanessa and Kathryn's team at CALM counseling ATX or with me at Aspen Nutrition Therapy! Book Reference: The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm !
In this episode, Katy Cox leads us through an IFS session with me as the "client" to demonstrate how this modality works. Katy is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Master of Public Health trained in eating disorders and IFS for dietitians. She provides insights to our behaviors in such a profound way that can allow someone to get unstuck, or atleast meet themselves with more compassion and understanding. If you're interested in working with Katy, you can find her on her website or instagram. She currently also works full time as a dietitian for Within Health and sees private practice clients on the side. You can also find me, Anafer, on my website or instagram for more support, to leave feedback, request a topic, or even just to say hello!
Katy Cox is a registered dietitian, dear friend and colleague, specializing in eating disorders. Katy works intimately with clients to normalize their relationships with food using evidence based strategies. She is Intuitive Eating and Health-at-Every-Size aligned, and is constantly working on growing and evolving herself as a professional and human. In this episode we discuss how effective dietetics has evolved and why we practice the way we do. Disclosure: Katy's mother is an Eating Disorder Therapist specializing in Internal Family Systems (IFS) At the end of the episode Katy explains how IFS can be used to explore the conflicting parts in us that keep us stuck in maladaptive coping mechanisms such as an eating disorder. **Katy states she is not a trained clinician, however she has completed a training on an IFS approach for dietitians by certified Practitioners: Diana Dugan Richards, RDN, LDN and Molly Kellogg, LCSW, CEDRD. Sasha Williams is hands down one of the most fascinating women I've ever spoken with. Raised in a small town in Colorado, she has a rich cultural background coming from immigrant parents and having lived in Ukraine, Maui, and even Japan. In the episode, Sasha provides compelling personal accounts of her upbringing - a parallel to the stories I have heard from countless clients of immigrant families - how it led her to trying harmful diets for 'health' or weight loss, and ultimately how she's come to approach fitness. Sasha was a powerlifting coach, certified personal trainer turned ski instructor and now ski patroller on Aspen Mountain. She is graceful with her prose, vulnerable with her ongoing efforts, and super freaking fun to learn from. If you're a Roaring Fork Valley local and want to take a free powerlifting class with her this summer, you can message me on my website and we will fill you in on the details! Oh yes! Another episode where we mention food guilt and Chocolat! (If you haven't seen it yet, this is your cue!) Kat Scheurer is dietitian nutritionist and personal trainer with a passion for helping others obsess less and live more! Like me, Kat sees the harm that society poses on well-intended, health-conscious individuals and uses non-diet, weight-inclusive work to assuage it. In this episode we enthusiastically admit to our mistakes as rule-following, healthy/disordered eaters, and leverage them to teach others how to find TRUE health with Intuitive Eating (and movement!). Dawn is a one-stop shop for all things eating disorders, but especially how exercise can go from healthy to unhelpful. With over 30 years in the field of exercise as a physical science and how it relates to mental health, she is the best resource for a compulsive exerciser. As a dietitian I was trained to encourage an active lifestyle, but it wasn't until I learned about HAES and eating disorders that I realized militant or punitive exercise can actually cause harm! Listen to how Dawn navigates compulsive exercise with her clients and learn how to be more intuitive with your movement. How wine can tune us in more than tune us out using pleasure as a portal to presence and why HOW we do something is a hell of a lot more important than what we do. In this episode we merge mindfulness and intention in order to eliminate shame and judgement from our consumption.  Full disclosure: there is so much more nuance to this dynamic conversation than is included in this 30-minute segment, including topics of addiction and sobriety that we are not pretending to be experts in. There are also infinite ways to seek pleasure in this world, to connect with nature, history, the earth, and other human beings that do not involve alcohol. One thing's for sure, everyone has disordered eating and a perfect relationship with food is just as mythical and out of reach as the perfect body. That said, there are some very clear dangers at play when it comes to thinking that weightloss is the path to health, and even just being preoccupied with health can be unhealthy. Because everyone has their own beliefs and lived experiences, I am not intentionally trying to tell you want to do, but rather telling you my story in a way that helps you understand why I hate diet culture and practice the way I do. If you're seeing yourself at a point in your health journey that these messages resonate, feel free to reach out. This Month (March 2023) is National Nutrition Month and the perfect time to explore your relationship with food and your body! Ep 7: The Break Up </3

Ep 7: The Break Up </3

2022-11-0718:19

Goodbye Rach, hello Guests!! Rachel is moving on to other things, such as two jobs, more time with her husband and cats, and her new youtube channel!! Looking ahead, we have more conversations about non-diet health, intuitive eating, the psychology of eating from the lense of registered dietitians and therapists, and eating disorders/disordered eating. I (Anafer) also plan to bring on past and current clients to share their story in hopes to spead a sense of common humanity that we are all experiencing in diet culture. CAN. NOT. WAIT. TO. DIVE. IN!
A brilliant claim once captivated us dietitians in our relentless pursuit to find the perfect diet for ourselves and our clients: "the best diet is the one you'll stick to". While there are SO many signs pointing to intermittent fasting, we discuss the holes in the hype and provide recommendations to make your diet a sustainable one.   *Anafer discusses specific foods in a woman's diet that were made up to portray of a certain dietary composition. The foods mentioned are not an accurate report of the person's diet nor is their mention a sign to avoid those foods. Soda, chips, and hot dogs can certainly fit into a healthy balanced diet.
Ep 5: Hunger Cues

Ep 5: Hunger Cues

2022-05-1944:43

In this episode we explore how to spot when you're hungry, and stop when you're full! Sounds simple? These 44 minutes don't even cover the half of it. We talk about the body's innate mechanism to start and stop eating, how it's tied to self-trust, distorted by dieting, and extremely nuanced. We also cover a few red flags that can come up when trying to listen to hunger cues. This episode does not replace one-on-one therapy or nutrition counseling. If you are struggling with your relationship with food, it's great to do your own "research" to explore what resonates, but it's even better to buddy up with a professional that you trust because this stuff may sound simple but it's not easy.
"I'll be happy when I'm skinnier"  "There's something wrong with me/my body because I'm not in the Normal BMI range” "X person is perfect/healthy/happy because they're thin, they must have something that I don't" "I should lose weight to get healthy" If you catch yourself thinking the above statements often, you're likely a victim of weight bias. In this episode we explore how weight bias shows up in our day-to-day lives, especially in healthcare settings. There is no direct answer to overcoming weight bias, but there are definitely things you can start doing now to make a difference in your life and the lives of others. We are ALL, as a society, trying to unlearn and challenge weight bias/weight stigma, so join us in this episode as a part of that journey!
Ep3: Food as Fuel

Ep3: Food as Fuel

2022-03-0847:31

Have you ever found yourself believing nutrition information that leads you to extremes? Fat is bad! Eat less, move more! The list goes on. Well, you aren’t alone. We did too. In this next episode of Chew On It, two dietitians expand on these claims and why they are detrimental to our well-being. Through both client and personal experiences, this episode teaches how to overcome these challenges in order to effectively work towards nourishing ourselves in a health-promoting way. Other questions featured in this episode include: are whole grains actually helpful? Can seemingly well-intended weight loss "anti-diet" apps be harmful?
Two dietitians cover the topic of consistency in Chew On It’s second episode: You Are What You Repeat. For most of us, there's dissonance between our current self and how we envision our future self to be. How do we bridge that gap? Rachel and Anafer discuss the impact that our values and support systems have on our health behaviors. We hope it give you something to chew on.
