Prof. Amir Ayali, School of Zoology, Tel Aviv University In this new Episode we dive into the captivating world of neuroethology and bio-inspired innovation. Our guest is Prof. Amir Ayali, a leading researcher at the Faculty of Life Sciences, who served as head of the Zoology Department from 2011 to 2015. His groundbreaking work reveals how the tiny brains of insects, like locusts and cockroaches, produce complex behaviors—from individual movement to swarm dynamics. Ayali’s research focuses on the neural and biomechanical mechanisms of locomotion, using insects as models to study motor control, decision-making, and group coordination. He explores how neural systems, such as central pattern generators, integrate with sensory feedback to drive behaviors like walking, flying, and digging. His findings on locust swarms uncover how simple visual cues lead to coordinated group movement, offering insights into both biology and agricultural challenges. Additionally, he investigates insect-environment interactions, including the effects of artificial light and microbiomes on behavior. A pioneer in interdisciplinary science, Ayali translates biological insights into bio-inspired technologies, from robotic locomotion to novel digging tools. His work bridges neuroscience and engineering, advancing our understanding of adaptive behavior while sparking innovative applications. Published in top journals, his research combines neurophysiology, behavioral assays, and computational modeling to decode the secrets of insect nervous systems. In the next hour, we’ll explore how locusts inspire cutting-edge robotics, unravel the neural basis of swarming, and question how insect behavior can shape future technologies. We’ll also discuss the impact of environmental factors on insects and their relevance to global challenges.__________________Tel Aviv 360, Israel's largest and most diverse podcast about research and innovation• Tel Aviv 360 in Facebook ◄ https://360tau.com/Facebook• Tel Aviv 360 in WhatsApp (Silent group) ◄ https://360tau.com/WhatsApp• Tel Aviv 360 in Spotify ◄ https://360tau.com/Spotify• Tel Aviv 360 official website ◄ https://360tau.com

Our guest in this new episode is Prof. Ben Maoz, who is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Sagol School Of Neuroscience at TAU.Prof. Maoz shares with our host, Ido Aharoni, an overview of his lab's different expertise, which mainly focuses in developing advanced tools for improving human physiology. Overall, Prof. Maoz will present three areas of expertise:Advanced tools to study human physiology – where he uses tissue engineering to create advanced tools that better mimic human physiology (e.g. Organs-on-a-Chip, organoids, iPSC).Integrated electronics – where he develops implantable electronics that enable to restore tactile sensation.Biohybrid robots – where he integrates the sensory systems of insects with robotic platforms to enable super-sensitive identification of smell using biological sensors. In the talk, we will demonstrate how these tools can be used to push forward the study of human physiology.__________________Tel Aviv 360, Israel's largest and most diverse podcast about research and innovation• Tel Aviv 360 in Facebook ◄ https://360tau.com/Facebook• Tel Aviv 360 in WhatsApp (Silent group) ◄ https://360tau.com/WhatsApp• Tel Aviv 360 in Spotify ◄ https://360tau.com/Spotify• Tel Aviv 360 official website ◄ https://360tau.com
Guest: Prof. Iftach Yacoby, The School of Plant Sciences and Food Security, TAUOur guest in this episode is framer-turned scientist Prof. Iftach Yacoby of the School of Plant Sciences and Food Security at TAU. His mission is to solve both problems at once: Food security and energy security. How is going to achieve this goal? That’s exactly whet this conversation is all about. Fellow researchers from Tel Aviv University explained his idea: To use green algae as tiny solar-powered factories that can produce two things we urgently need: clean hydrogen fuel and protein-rich food. By growing algae with sunlight and water, his team can generate renewable energy while also creating nutritious biomass that can be used as food or feed. This way, the same system helps tackle both climate change and global hunger at once. Hence, micro-algae are a genuine green coin, with one side representing energy security and the other food security.__________________Tel Aviv 360, Israel's largest and most diverse podcast about research and innovation• Tel Aviv 360 in Facebook ◄ https://360tau.com/Facebook• Tel Aviv 360 in WhatsApp (Silent group) ◄ https://360tau.com/WhatsApp• Tel Aviv 360 in Spotify ◄ https://360tau.com/Spotify• Tel Aviv 360 official website ◄ https://360tau.com

Our guest is renowned architect and urban planner Prof. Tali Hatuka. She is described as an Israeli architect and urban designer, and teaches in the Faculty of Social Science (and formerly at the Department of Geography, now defunct) at Tel Aviv University. She also directs the Urban Design Laboratory at TAU. Tali is the winner of the 2012 Rechter Prize for Young Architect. She often writes on the connections between spatial design and architecture, social issues and violence, as well as industrial urban planning and ways to insert industry and manufacturing into urban space. Her laboratory seeks to challenge, refine and update knowledge in the field of urban planning, in Israel and around the world. By engaging in housing, employment, urban renewal and urban landscape, the laboratory offers new directions of thought on human living environments. It was founded in 2009 and since its inception, the laboratory has been engaged in refining the knowledge, methods, and toolbox available to the planner, architect, and geographer. Through a process of creative and critical development, the connections between the social and physical aspects of the city are explored and experimental strategies are examined for policymakers in matters of urban planning and design. As a mediation framework between practice and theory, the laboratory serves as a place for the production and dissemination of knowledge and promotes collaborations with authorities, communities, and researchers in the field of urban renewal and design. We discussed the interface between planners and policy makers.Picture Tali Hatuka - Ofer Vaknin__________________Tel Aviv 360, Israel's largest and most diverse podcast about research and innovation• Tel Aviv 360 in Facebook ◄ https://360tau.com/Facebook• Tel Aviv 360 in WhatsApp (Silent group) ◄ https://360tau.com/WhatsApp• Tel Aviv 360 in Spotify ◄ https://360tau.com/Spotify• Tel Aviv 360 official website ◄ https://360tau.com
