It'll take you half the time to get from Bergamo to Lake Como than it would Stratford to the River Thames, but Giulia Ferrandi's mission to play in London wasn't halted by the love for her birthplace - nor did a cruciate ligament injury, which kept her out of action for several months and almost ended her career. Giulia tells us about her journey to WSL2 and Watford from Atalanta, via Brescia, a 5 a side indoor team and Julian Dicks' West Ham. The opening day of the Premier League season provided many underwhelming performances and results, so it's a good thing Sunday's games restored parity. David Bardsley, Rhodri Giggs and Yian Ioannou join Stel to discuss the weekend's games and there are some harsh words reserved for Arsenal Football Club. We also pay tribute to Dalian Atkinson, who tragically lost his life on Monday 15th of August. We're HERE! Michael hosts this Olympics inspired diversion where he is joined on the show by British triple jump athlete Laura Samuel. Laura won a silver medal at the World Junior Championships in 2010 jumping 13.75m and setting a British junior record. As a senior,Laura has the won the British outdoors title on five separate occasions. In 2014, she represented England at the Commonwealth Games in India and won a silver medal, smashing her personal best and jumping beyond 14m. While the show is Athletics related, we couldn't ignore our football responsibilities. Laura is an ardent Leicester fan and we talked a bit about the club's historic title winning season and Charity Shield game vs Manchester United.
These days the word "legend" is used to describe practically any individual in football, despite their personal achievements being totally irrelevant to the game. Our guest, however, epitomises the word "legend". Bobby Gould was a pro footballer for 16 years and coached for 31 - a truly remarkable time in the game. Bobby's experience, knowledge and passion for the game is rare to find in modern day footballers and managers. His account of incidents is always delivered with the same intensity and passion as when he was on the training ground and in the dugout. A true honour for us all at Shoot The Defence. While the Manchester United Academy conveyor belt continues to produce elite talent, we focus on a player who was involved in the club's most successful period in youth and reserve level. Ritchie Jones may be the perfect example of "right place, wrong time" as his playing time at Manchester United was limited due to signings such as Djemba-Djemba and Kleberson. Nevertheless, Ritchie's ability didn't go unnoticed as he was snapped up by the likes of Paul Dickov and Peter Jackson. Ironically, Ritchie's happiest period in his senior football career was at a club whose primary focus is on developing players, ready for the first team - that being FC Edmonton in Canada.
