OpenAI generates embeddings ($0.02/1M tokens), Pinecone offers managed vector storage ($50+/month), and Weaviate provides open-source flexibility with hybrid search ($25+/month). Choose Pinecone for zero-ops simplicity, Weaviate for GraphQL APIs and on-premise deployment. Both handle billion-scale vectors with sub-100ms latency. Common pitfalls: poor chunking strategy, mixing embedding models, and ignoring rate limits during initial indexing.

Who Owns The Moon? The Coming Fight Over Space Law and Treaties

This story was originally published on HackerNoon at: https://hackernoon.com/who-owns-the-moon-the-coming-fight-over-space-law-and-treaties. Who owns the Moon? In my view, we should resist this creeping enclosure. The Moon is not a new colony; it is a shared scientific laboratory and cultural heritage site. To honour the Outer Space Treaty’s promise that outer space is the province of all humankind, we need an inclusive regime that provides legal certainty for private actors while ensuring equitable benefit-sharing and environmental protection. Such a regime could draw lessons from the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which established an international seabed authority and requires companies to share benefits from deep-sea mining. At a minimum, states should agree to: (1) register resource extraction activities, (2) cap the size and duration of safety zones, (3) contribute to an international fund that invests in global scientific research and infrastructure, and (4) safeguard cultural and environmental heritage. Without these checks, the Moon could become yet another arena where powerful nations externalize risk and monopolize gains.

Do Large Language Models Have Theory of Mind? A Benchmark Study

This story was originally published on HackerNoon at: https://hackernoon.com/do-large-language-models-have-theory-of-mind-a-benchmark-study. Does GPT-4 really understand us? This story was written by: @escholar. Learn more about this writer by checking @escholar's about page, and for more stories, please visit hackernoon.com. This article evaluates whether advanced language models like GPT-4 and Flan-PaLM demonstrate Theory of Mind (ToM)—the ability to reason about others’ beliefs, intentions, and emotions. While results show GPT-4 sometimes matches or even exceeds adult human performance on 6th-order ToM tasks, limitations remain: the benchmark is small, English-only, and excludes multimodal signals that shape real human cognition. Future research must expand across cultures, languages, and embodied interactions to truly test AI’s capacity for mind-like reasoning.

GPT-4 Outsmarts Humans in Theory of Mind Tests

This story was originally published on HackerNoon at: https://hackernoon.com/gpt-4-outsmarts-humans-in-theory-of-mind-tests. GPT-4 outperformed humans in higher-order Theory of Mind tests, raising both possibilities and risks for the future of AI. Check more stories related to tech-stories at: https://hackernoon.com/c/tech-stories. You can also check exclusive content about #theory-of-mind-ai, #gpt-4-social-intelligence, #ai-higher-order-reasoning, #ai-mental-state-inference, #recursive-reasoning-in-ai, #ai-social-behavior-research, #language-model-benchmarks, #llm-cognitive-abilities, and more. This story was written by: @escholar. Learn more about this writer by checking @escholar's about page, and for more stories, please visit hackernoon.com. This study compares the Theory of Mind (ToM) capabilities of large language models like GPT-4, Flan-PaLM, PaLM, GPT-3.5, and LaMDA against humans. Results show that GPT-4 not only matched but exceeded human performance on complex ToM tasks, aided by its scale, multimodality, and fine-tuning. While larger models and instruction tuning improve social reasoning, findings also highlight ethical risks: AI systems with advanced ToM may better adapt to human goals but could equally enable manipulation and exploitation.
