A CONVERSATION with Nichole Brown, PhD who is the founder of Canines for Change - Have you observed the different types of places that are adding "facility" dogs to their daily staff? Schools, courtrooms, hospitals, senior care facilities and many others are using the calming influence of dogs to reassure the people they see and spend time with. Listen Saturday at 9AM as Doctor Will Schultz, DVM (retired) and Lee Cohen talk about this with Nichole Brown, PhD who is the founder of Canines for Change about the mission of their organization and how it came about. First you will hear about the process that organizations go through in order to get a fully trained facility dogs. What kind of dogs are the most successful at fulfilling roles like that? Why are so many places requesting these dogs and how is the supply keeping up with the demand? Nichole will also discuss the 12 schools in which they have dogs assigned and the types of functions they serve. She also discusses the extensive breeding, fostering and training programs the dogs go through before, during and after they are assigned. Nichole also discusses the psychology background she has and how useful it has been in assisting children and training dogs! the recent opening of the Constellation Cat Cafe Then Doctor Kerry Lewis, DVM from the Riverside Cat Hospital - Good news for cat lovers in Mid Michigan the last few months! Two businesses that specialize in cats have moved locations and expanded their operations to increase the amount of people and cats that can be served. Listen Saturday at 9AM as Doctor Will Schultz, DVM (retired) and Lee Cohen learn all about the recent opening of the Constellation Cat Cafe in Old Town from the new Executive Director Savannah Segueda. Their wings move so fast they create the humming sound that is distinct. If you have prepared a feeder properly, you will usually find it visited from "regular" visitors who will seek out the nectar source you provide. But more is going on then you may know! Allen has specialized certification which allows him to band thousands of hummingbirds, and has done so every year since 2000. Allen is also certified to do songbird banding but is exclusive in Michigan and other midwest states for Hummingbirds. How many varieties are in Michigan? When do they arrive in Michigan and when do they leave? How do you band them? How long do they live? What does it mean when they fly in a u shaped pattern by the feeder? Doctor Croney created the standards of care in 2013 and is director of Canine Care Certified which is administered by Purdue University. This program establishes extensive, science-based standards for breeders to ensure a higher, documented quality of care for dogs and puppies. Find out why breeder groups and organizations in many states are imitating elements of this Indiana program and are seeing similar patterns in the improvement of health and behaviors with the increased standards. It is also why the cost of purebred dogs have increased due to the additional costs that go into this care. The Monarch, a popular butterfly in Michigan, has been reduced in population the last few decades. What can be causing this? Can it be reduced or prevented?
