You're probably too busy to listen to a podcast today... so I thought it'd be better to record a quick Christmas message instead. Thanks for the support, have a great day and see you in the new year!
What a first episode! I've followed Knowit for the past 5 years and was so excited to chat to Samm all about their journey! Only 2 years old, Knowit have arrived on the UK recruitment scene with a bang.  25 staff and plans to grow to 40 ASAP.  In this episode you will hear the reality of what's really happened and how Samm & Nick (business partner) have achieved so much in such a short space
Ricky has successfully grown a 'life saving' recruitment agency with 50 staff and £1 million net profit inside 5 years! Having watched Ricky speak at an event 12 months ago, I was so excited to tell his story on the RAG. Most people know the apprentice and have their own opinions of the contestants. However in this episode Ricky tells the truth about the experience and the pro's and the con's of going into business after being in the public eye. What his Agency has achieved in only 6 years is remarkable and I believe that Recruitment business owners (current and future) can learn so much from his journey! You can connect with https://www.linkedin.com/in/rickymartin247/ (Ricky on Linkedin.)
I loved recording this episode in December! Jon arrived (late) with Christmas crackers, minced pies and beers. We embarked on a weird and wonderful conversation about his journey to recruitment agency success. Jon is one of the most open, direct and passionate Recruitment Owners I have ever met. In this episode he doesn't hold back on the 'highs and lows' that he has experienced since starting his agency in 2012.
James Parsons is one of the most relaxed yet inspiring Recruitment owners I have ever met. He started his recruitment business with a partner from the bedroom of his apartment in Clapham in 2003. Over the next 15 years they went through unbelievable growth, was almost shut down through a lawsuit in the middle of the global financial crisis in 2008 and James was finally bought out by his partner in 2017. He is now sole owner of the Arrows Group and on a mission to double the revenue for another wealth creating 'event' within 3 years. If you have a longer term plan in mind for your agency you have to hear this story ...
Sasza Bandiera is a real recruitment success story! He started at Oyster in 2008 with no qualifications as a trainee. He believed in the owner of the business and kept his head down, working hard to learn his trade in the property recruitment market. He then worked his way up to taking over the management of the 10 man agency in 2013 and has since taken the business to a whole new level. 59 staff strong with structure and process in place, Sasza has built a winning culture thats 97% built on homegrown talent! He's such an honest and humble guy who clearly believes that investing in his team is the key to his success.
Chris and Dale are the Co-Founders of 11 year old high growth tech recruitment business ‘Understanding Recruitment’.  A St Albans based company with 50 staff, they have learnt how to grow their business through good and bad economic times! In this episode they talk passionately about their learnings in the early days and how they have grown the business (and their families) since. A great example of working closely with a co-founder and appreciating that it takes a lot of effort to make this successful relationship work!
In 2002, Matthew Eames founded Eames Consulting from a small office space in Hammersmith.  Having originally worked as an Underwriter in the Lloyd’s of London Insurance Market himself, he spent 4 years prior to setting up his business, learning to recruit for the very sector he knew.  He adopted a clear ‘industry focus’ alongside a niche recruitment vertical, and this was a recipe for top billing success.  This foundation was clearly a great contributor to his amazing journey as a business owner, where he has developed 140 staff, 4 global offices and multiple brands in the Group offering a range of services. I personally loved recording this episode, as Matthew’s business was my biggest competitor in my recruitment career and I know first hand how his brand and business was received by the market!
Lloyd Gordon is the CEO and Founder of Focus Cloud, a super niche Recruitment business specialising in supporting the global implementation projects of HR System ‘Workday’ An ex £1.6 million biller, he clearly knows how to make money but he’s fully aware that growing a business isn’t about him.  In this episode Lloyd gets straight into his story from starting life in humble beginnings to starting his agency with only  enough money to pay for his wife and kids to live for 4 months!  We didn’t even scratch the surface of the Focus Cloud story when the time ran out so this is only Part 1 with Lloyd on The RAG!
Ben Heathorn is the MD of Joss Search a boutique Recruitment Agency specialising in sourcing support staff for Private Equity companies, founded by his wife Sivan. Over the past decade, Ben had a hugely successful career in launching food and beverage brands- most notably he was part of the team that launched ‘Pop Chips’ in the UK and took the brand from zero products on the shelves to £20 million in sales!  In early 2018 with NO experience of working in Recruitment, Ben and Sivan decided that he would join the operation as Managing Director to take the brand to the next level. In the first quarter of his role, Sivan fell pregnant with their second child, which meant Ben would be taking the helm later in 2018! Such a great episode as Ben tells us his unique story and his plans for the future!
In this weeks episode I met Dominic Nelson, the Founder of Jazz Personnel, a Niche recruitment Agency focussed on support staff into the Legal Sector. Dom reached out to me on Instagram a few weeks back, to say he enjoyed listening to The RAG and would love to share his start up story.  Based in the North East of England with less than 2 years experience, he started recruiting from a Box room on his own! He dreamt of the glamour of being an owner, but he described his actual start up journey as ‘horrible’ He’s now survived 3 years and hired 2 more staff and is looking to break the London Legal market - but gives his honest opinion of the ‘North V South’ divide that exists in the UK recruitment industry! An eye opening story that I hope adds value to anyone looking to start up in the future..
Steven is the CEO & Founder of Samuel Knight, a specialist Recruitment Agency in the Energy and Rail sectors, headquartered in Newcastle UK.  5 years old, he has grown to 40 staff and just received a significant cash injection to take his agency and aggressively grow globally!  It hasn’t always been a smooth ride for Steve though, in this episode he reveals how he was taken to court and made to pay for some huge early mistakes. He nearly went into administration when his processes weren’t good enough and although his agency was billing well - their clients simply weren’t paying…   This was one hell of an episode and not to be missed if you are looking for global expansion in the future!
Nadia Edwards-Dashti is the Managing Director and Co-Founder of Harrington Starr Group, an award winning Recruitment Agency with over 70 staff across offices in London, New York and San Francisco.  A business that leads from the front with Content Marketing and hosting industry events- most commonly the story of their success is told from the perspective of CEO Toby Babb.  However, I wanted to tell a different version of the story. Nadia was with Toby and James Hounslow from day 1 and worked with both Co-Founders in previous Agencies. She’s been the backbone of the training of all staff and led the launch of their 2nd business - North Starr.  A truly inspirational female who is proud of being a recruiter and LOVES the sector she supports, gives a real honest look into the inner workings of making an agency grow alongside business partners.  I believe she should be recognised as a role model for recruiters everywhere and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did recording it!
Joshua Rayner is the Founder and Group CEO at Rayner Group- headquartered in Bishops Stortford, this is a group of specialist recruitment businesses centred on supporting the residential property industry across the UK. He started Rayner Personnel 6 years ago and has since grown across the country through a unique franchising model which now consists of 11 satellite offices and 38 staff. However, this isn’t Josh’s first Recruitment business. It is actually his 3rd after starting and exiting 2 other recruitment businesses under very different circumstances. Josh was refreshingly open throughout the episode and shares lots of learnings for those listening!
Altin Biba is the CEO and Founder of Pro Medical, an 11 year old, well established Healthcare Recruitment business working with clients across the UK. Headquartered in Brentwood Essex (UK) he now has 40 Staff, £11m turnover and some real plans for growth. Started his Recruitment Business in the middle of the Global Financial Crisis out of frustration that his previous employer did not the same level of ambition for growth as he did! He quickly recruited his younger brother and set up an office in a bespoke shed at the end of the family garden!  In June 2008 - within 3 months of starting, he was on a flight, traveling to a family funeral when he  received a call to say he was being sued. This serious law suite stopped him from trading for a number of months and almost wiped his business out.  In this raw interview, Altin tells us how he needed to show ultimate resilience to fight the case and ensure the business survived. He talks about how he ran out of money, was not able to afford the legal costs, he was advised that it was cheaper to liquidate the company and even offered to sell the business, but not for a split second did he ever consider closing the business down. Since then, he’s been on an amazing journey and in 2019 its all about headcount growth! I had so much fun recording this interview and really appreciate Altin being so candid for the audiences benefit!
Malvin is the Founding Director of Vallum Associates - a specialist Recruitment Agency and Consultancy to the Energy, Utilities and now Financial Services Markets. I loved recording this episode as Malvin is an ex colleague of mine and close friend. We worked together in our previous Recruitment Agency and I have seen his career grow personally. However, what always baffled me was the shock when Malvin quit his agency career to start his own business at the point where he was just starting to build a name for himself in his sector. We discuss how he has grown Vallum with 2 partners (non recruiters) to 8 staff and found the task of hiring and development the biggest challenge. As always, there was laughter, real stories and another honest reality of the life as a Recruitment Agency owner…
Caroline is the CEO and Founder of Recruitment Agency - Hybrid and Recruitment Tech Company - http://place.me/ (Place.Me). She started her Recruitment Career 6 years ago by accident! She was previously an Agency Marketer and then Store Manager in the Retail Sector when her brother gave her the task of finding some of her old contacts for his Marketing Agency. She then went on an amazing start-up journey leading to the birth of 2 growing businesses. An extremely impressive Female Recruitment Leader who lays out the truth about how hard it is to start your company and skills you need to succeed in today’s market.
This week we decided to release a special episode of The RAG! Why I started Hoxo Media2. How Inbound Marketing has helped grow my business 3. What is Inbound Marketing?4. Examples of recent successful campaigns5. Why you should get started todayI 100% believe that any ambitious agency owner in 2019 should be seriously considering investing in their brand with the aim of driving relevant leads INBOUND.. I really hope this speech adds value and sparks ideas that you can action in your business straight away...
Marc is the CEO and Founder of Robertson Sumner - an IT Sales and Technical Recruitment Agency based in Gerrards Cross UK. Marc started the agency 20 years ago after earning £200k in his only 1.5yrs as a recruitment consultant (at the age of 21 years old).A man who openly didn’t have a growth plan for a long time, he enjoyed building the business with a small group of great people who all benefited from the shared financial success. However, after a tough few years during and after the Global Financial Crisis, Marc realised that he was actually holding the agency back in the plans to grow further.Since changing his role personally and appointing Calum to lead the team, he has seen year on year growth and now plans to double the headcount in the next few years..A great guy and a really enjoyable chat, there are lots of nuggets to take away in this episode!
Clare is the Executive Director at Glocomms, a Phaidon International brand.Headquartered in London with 11 offices globally, Phaidon have had an amazing story of growth since starting in 2004 and Clare is a product of this environment. She shares her story of working in the company as a graduate (working hard and playing hard), how she moved to the US to start the San Fransisco office and later grew a team in New York. The culture may have changed as they have been through 2 rounds of investment and hired so many people but the core DNA is still very much alive! She has SOO much energy and a real love for both the business and the recruitment industry...
