On October 31, 1963, 6 year old Michael Myers kills his first victim in the form of his older sister. Over the next 15 years Michael is locked up in Smiths Grove Sanitarium where his hunger for taking lives grows until one day he escapes and heads back to his hometown of Haddonfield to continue what he started. That's right, this week we review the movie that started a whole new genre of horror, made Jamie Lee Curtis the very first scream queen AND would go on to have 11 movies and counting in the franchise that span 4 different timelines! (3 of which stem the timeline in THIS movie) That movie is John Carpenter's Halloween starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasence and Nick Castle. Does this horror classic still hold up 40 years later? Or does it need to be sent back to the Sanitarium from which it came? We go back to 1992 to review A Few Good Men. Directed by Rob Reiner, the man who directed such classics as Stand By Me, Misery and The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men has an incredible cast that includes Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Jack Nicholson, Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin Bacon. In it lies the story of two U.S. Marines who are charged with killing a fellow Marine, possibly after being given an order known as a Code Red. With a nostalgic filled 90's all star cast, does this legal drama captivate the viewer enough to keep them interested for over 2 hours? Or must we try and handle the truth that this movie is only remembered for it's one memorable line? Or should it be added to the list of classics already on Rob Reiner's resume? On February 27, 2009, Swedish film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was released and was very well received by critics, spawning a TV mini series and two sequels. Which one stays true to the book? Is one truly better than the other? Join Brandon and the one and only Effin Stephan as they follow computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist as they put together clues in order to figure out what happened to a girl who went missing 40 years ago to find out the true mystery... which was mentioned before... On this episode we review Rian Johnson's 2012 time travel film, Looper starring Joseph Gordon Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt. The movie is about Loopers, assassins in the present that are sent back targets from a future where killing people is damn near impossible. But what happen's when the person sent back is you? On Septembers Coming Attractions episode we do what we always do and start with a retrospective of last months reviews. Then we move on to Coming to Theaters where Toby explains The Conjuring universe to Brandon, Brandon gets hard nipples talking about the upcoming Predator movie and Toby introduces Brandon to the short film Batman Dead End. OH! And we also create #TobysPlots, a new segment within a segment that we've actually done before where Toby comes up with plots for movies coming to theaters that we've never heard of before. Based on the novel of the same name by author Dean Koontz, Phantoms tells the story of an unknown force that goes on a killing spree in the small town of Snowfield, Colorado and leaves only a small group of survivors alive. Why? Some answers we get, some we don't. But it's up to the small group to figure out a way to draw out the unknown force and defeat it face to face. Sort of. When it all comes down to it, the real question is... was Ben Affleck in fact the bomb in Phantoms or should this movie be buried deep within the depths of the Earth only to be seen again every 1000 years or so? At this point most people know the story... Krypton goes boom, baby Superman travels to Earth to grow up with the Kents and eventually grows up to work for a newspaper while at the same time being a superhero. That's right, we're talking about Superman! And on this episode we go back to 1978 to review the first big budget full length Superman film simply titled, Superman starring Christopher Reeve as the man of steel himself. The film had the biggest budget of any film up until that point ($55 million) and is considered to be one of the best superhero movies of all time... but is that the truth? Has this movie stood the test of time in a day in age where we get a new superhero movie almost on a monthly basis? After trying to get the rights to do a movie with either Batman or The Shadow and getting turned down, Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi decided to create his own kind of superhero in the form of Darkman. Darkman tells the stoty of poor Peyton Westlake, who is just trying to find a formula for synthetic skin when he is blown up by the evil finger collecting thug Robert Duran. With next to no skin left on his face, Westlake must find a way to finish the synthetic skin formula in order to reunite with the love of his life, Julie. Oh and he's also slowly going insane due to nerves being cut somewhere in his brain by doctors... Did Sam Raimi have what it takes to create his very own kind of hero or should he stick to adapting characters that are already established? Join Brandon and Effin Stephan to find out!
In 1988 DC comic book fans were given the decision to either let Jason Todd (the second person to take on the Robin mantle) live or die at the hands of the Joker. The votes were in, and the decision was yes, as the character didn't have any fans after his origin was revamped. 17 years later, Jason Todd returned from the land of the dead to take on another classic mantle, The Red Hood. Only now he's not the kind of hero Batman wanted him to be, he does what Batman won't... kill. Now back in Gotham, The Red Hood wants to know one thing and one thing only, why has Batman let the Joker live? Based on the comic book story arc of the same name, we review (if you haven't guessed it already) Batman: Under the Red Hood! Does this adaptation do the comic book justice? It is time for another Coming Attractions episode for the month of June of the year 2018! And on this months episode, during our Retrospective segment, Toby tells us his thoughts on 1920's The Hunchback of Notre Dame and we also retrospect the other movies we reviewed last month. Then we go over the movies coming to theatres this month, discussing Upgrade, Sicario 2 and The Incredibles 2. Then we choose the movies we will be reviewing this month from the almighty Master List! 1 horror film, 1 DC animated feature, 1 Sam Raimi superhero film, ANOTHER silent film and an Arnold Schwarzenegger film that Brandon actually has not seen! It is finally time for us to review our first film by the Master of Horror himself, John Carpenter! Only it's not a horror movie that we're reviewing, it's Carpenter's second film,1973's Assault on Precinct 13. Written, directed AND with music composed by Carpenter, Assault of Precinct 13 tells the story of newly promoted lieutenant Ethan Bishop and his first night on the job babysitting a soon-to-be closed police station. But when the station is under attack by local L.A. gang Street Thunder, Bishop must team up with a group of prisoners if there's going to be any chance of survival. Inspired by movies like Howard Hanks Western films Rio Bravo and George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead, Assault on Precinct 13 was met with mixed reviews when it first came to theatres in 1976 but has since gained quite a bit of a cult following and has even been called on of the best action films of its era. On this episode we review Nacho Vigalondo's homage to monster movies, 2016's Colossal starring Anne Hathaway as the alcoholic Gloria. You see, Gloria is at a point in her life where everything is just turning into a colossal... heap of poop. Not only is she kicked out by her boyfriend Tim for drinking and always coming home in the early hours of the morning hungover, but now that she has somewhere to stay, she doesn't have any furniture what so ever, or a job, or even an idea... then to top it all off, there's a chance she might be unintentionally controlling a monster on the other side of the world... so there's that. So join Brandon Reid and Effin Stephan as they go through this oddball of a movie and try to count how many metaphors there really are. Because even if unintentionally, there seem to be quite a few!
