Description
Running is the one thing that we all like talking about. Every week on the award winning Women’s Running podcast, we talk all things running, women, health and fitness with our own brand of happy, irreverent chat. Esther and Holly talk through their training highs and lows, and all the bits and pieces in-between. Every so often, we invite an expert to join us to help us figure out the confusing worlds of training, recovery, nutrition, health and more. And sometimes we get to talk to an incredible woman from the world of running, from Anna McNuff to Paula Radcliffe, Susie Chan to Nicky Spinks. So why do we do it? Because we realised that most of the running podcasts we listened to were full of blokes waffling on about quads and cadence (and we realised that we can do that perfectly well ourselves, thank you very much). Right here, we talk about all the things that affect us when we step out the door: sexism, hormones, menopause, food, pelvic floors, relationships, mental health, seagull attacks and wild weeing. But. BUT. We will also talk about races, PBs, shoes, training, starting running, enjoying running, finding the fun. And quads and cadence. This is the Women’s Running podcast, and it’s for women who love to run. Get bonus content on Patreon

Welcome to Am I Nuts. This is the last episode in a special series of ten weekly podcasts from us at the Women’s Running podcast. I am your host Esther Newman, and she is your other host Holly Taylor.Hol and I are natural born worriers, but with many of our worries, we’ve thought we were the only ones. We thought we were nuts. During this series, we’ve been chatting about the worries that make us feel that way – and ten episodes isn’t enough! If this episode resonates with you, or you have something you think we should talk about, then please email us at wrpodcast@anthem.co.uk and fingers crossed we’ll roll out another series. Christmas worriesWe’ve gone seasonal for this episode: are we nuts for worrying about Christmas? Holly, as her name suggest, has always been very festive focused, and loved the season, but now is teetering on the edge of getting stressed about all the Christmas things: the money, the socializing, the expectation of joy. We talk through the stress of cooking, the stress of families and the stress of producing perfect presents. Am I Nuts is brought to you by the Women’s Running podcast. Friendship groups wax and wane, but sometimes it can be easy to compare ourselves with TV programmes and stuff online that suggests that we “should” have hundreds of close friends. We delve into how our groups have changed since childhood, the feelings that make us feel inadequate in terms of our friends, and what we do to support the friendships that we have. We also talk about the concept of a “best friend” and whether that’s something that grown-up women need, as well as the difference between men’s friendships and women’s friendships.Join us!Am I Nuts is brought to you by the Women’s Running podcast – do please check it out wherever you listen to your podcasts for longer episodes to keep you company while you run. Obviously there’s that time around early parenthood, but also perimenopause, general aging, anxiety and mental health that can affect all of us. But I’ve been getting worried about how insomnia can have a more long-term effect on our physical health. We talk about the risks of lack of sleep, but also oversleeping, occasional sleep deprivation, strategies for overcoming occasional insomnia. She’s also been craving Cream Eggs like nobody’s business. The prime suspect is that old buzzkill, the menstrual cycle. This gets us chatting about the phases of our periods, how to track them and how tricky understanding our bodies can be. 5K nutritionShe’s also been generally hungrier since the start of this training journey, so it’s time to talk about fuelling. What should we be eating before a run and how long do we need to wait before we go out? We offer Cara some advice before sending her off with a brand new running journal. She’s done brilliantly, and tells us all about her highs and lows. She discovers that, sometimes, running is brilliant for no particular reason while, at other times, it feels rubbish for no particular reason. DOMSShe’s dispelled her shin splint fears this week and is instead discovering all about Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness – for which Esther has some sage advice as well as some great post-run stretches for increased mobility. Plus, a lovely listener shares some tips that get us talking about how best to approach a bear if we ever come across one in Somerset. Links• This series is sponsored by Vivobarefoot. It’s absolutely freezing this week, so we’re kicking things off by talking about what kit to wear to beat the chill. Cara’s also got some concerns about shin splints, which are a very common injury for beginners – we delve into what they really are and how to prevent them. Plus, there’s a bit of chat about how best to time these runs with a watch, so listen up if that’s something you need support with.Links• This series is sponsored by Vivobarefoot. Just listened to latest podcast and have downloaded the happy half marathon training programme. I spread run 3 times a week 2 5k's and one around 8-10k. Would you thunk starting at werk 5 will be ok to do as is roughly the time I'm running now?
