Toni & Lesley are joined by Sarah Churchman OBE a global leader in DEI and Workplace Wellbeing, with over 20 years of experience driving innovative, data-driven solutions that align diversity initiatives with business success, mostly for PwC where she spent 37 years in total. Sarah is known for her pioneering work in de-biasing HR processes and fostering inclusive environments where diversity thrives. KEY TAKEAWAYS Everyone has biases. The lack of diversity at the top demonstrates that there is a lack of equality in the workplace. Inequality outside of work plays a significant role in inequality at work. If you take on the bulk of domestic chores, and child and elder care duties, you don´t have as much time and energy left for work. Plan for what you want to do in your career. You don´t have to be liked to do well, you have to be respected. Get yourself seen - network with those above you and people outside of your firm. To get to the top you need a sponsor. Be authentic and do work that you enjoy. BEST MOMENTS “None of us are as inclusive as we think we are. “ “It takes certain people to sit above the parapet to get things done. “ “My husband would say I am stubborn. I say I am persistent. “ THE GUEST Sarah Churchman is a pioneering global DEI and Workplace Wellbeing leader with over 20 years of experience in professional services. She takes a data-driven and innovative approach to developing solutions that align DEI and Wellbeing initiatives with business goals. Sarah is a trusted coach to senior leaders, known for her ability to guide them through challenging changes. Her groundbreaking work in de-biasing HR processes, particularly in Talent Acquisition, has been foundational in making organizations like PwC more diverse. Sarah champions creating inclusive environments where diversity thrives, ensuring long-term equity and business success. Today, Toni & Lesley are joined by Camilla Grayley. For many years, Camilla worked in the corporate world before following her lifelong passion setting up her successful garden design firm, which also resulted in her becoming a writer and author. This episode is packed with tips for new entrepreneurs and provides an interesting insight into what people are investing in for their gardens.   KEY TAKEAWAYS A nice garden adds value to any house. Spotting new trends is a great way of boosting sales and attracting new clients. Social media is important, but don´t forget to tap into older forms of marketing. Be patient with your marketing and consistent. Networking and word of mouth are still important. Regularly pause and check that your business is still heading in the right direction. Little changes have a big cumulative impact on the environment, so gardens are important. Invest in rainwater harvesting.   BEST MOMENTS “If you can get through the 1st 5 years you can get through the rest. “ “Put the cabling in now, so it is there when you decide you do want outside lights. “ “Just a small group of plants in your garden is equivalent to having 8 mindfulness sessions.”     ABOUT CAMILLA GRAYLEY   My love for gardening started early, helping in the family garden, and spending my pocket money on plants. After studying Ecology and Environment Management, I pursued a formal horticultural education, earning an RHS certificate and a Diploma in Garden Design.   Now, I create gardens of all sizes for all kinds of clients. I delight in watching the garden come to life and evolve and pausing to soak it all in with a drink in hand while enjoying the local wildlife.   You can contact me here : https://www.instagram.com/camillagrayley https://www.facebook.com/Camillagrayleydesign https://www.pinterest.co.uk/camillagrayleydesign https://twitter.com/camillagrayley https://linkedin.com/camillagrayley     WORK WITH ME   If you're ready for greater clarity and confidence to create the freedom and alignment, you crave in in business and life. For this episode, Toni & Lesley are joined by Stephanie Shaw a menopause educator, health & wellness speaker and host of the Hello Hot Flash podcast. She helps women navigate menopause and reduce the impact the symptoms have on their lives.  She, Toni and Lesley share some simple yet powerful tips to help you tap into the power of keeping a health journal, moving regularly, eating right and taking care of your mental and emotional health. KEY TAKEAWAYS Even now, most women do not know much about menopause. Yet, with the right advice most of the symptoms can be reduced and sometimes eliminated. Educating our girls and boys about menopause is important. Working out like crazy creates another stressor for your already over-stressed body to deal with. Everybody´s menopause is different. There are 100+ different symptoms. Keep a health journal to help you identify patterns and triggers. Looking after your mental and emotional health is crucial. It takes a lot of stress off your body. Hot flashes can be triggered when we get emotional. Fix your gut. Avoid processed foods. To avoid temptation, don´t walk every supermarket aisle. Go straight to the fresh food.  Always have some pre-prepared healthy food in the fridge. Preparation is key.  Use plus 1, minus 1. Choose one bad thing and stop doing that. At the same time, choose  one thing that is good for you and start doing that. Going through menopause is not easy, but many women find that they emerge from it with healthier habits and feeling far more in tune with who they are. BEST MOMENTS ‘If you are eating about 90% right you´ll be good. ’ ‘We call it the fundies, the fundamentals – eat, move, sleep. ’ ‘Taking care of yourself mind body and soul is super important. ’ ABOUT THE GUEST Stephanie Shaw, Podcast Host, Menopause Educator Stephanie Shaw is a health & wellness speaker, course creator, and the host of the highly popular podcast "Hello Hot Flash." Toni & Lesley are joined by V Chamberlin-Kidd a core shamanic practitioner who also taps into the power of plant medicine by using essential oils. In this episode, she talks about her work, family life, her recent ADHD diagnosis, and her autism.  V explains what a shamanic practitioner does, how it reconnects us with nature, feeds our soul and enables us to become an active part of the globe´s vast ecosystem once again. KEY TAKEAWAYS Centuries ago, people from different totally unconnected cultures independently developed shamanic practices and healing knowledge that were very similar. It is this ancient universal wisdom that modern shamanic practitioners use. We have become detached from nature. Truly reconnecting with it feeds the soul. As we go through life we lose bits of our soul. You can get these back. Communication is particularly difficult with ADHD. If you find something annoys you, work out why. Neurodiverse people´s nervous systems are dysregulated which makes them highly strung. Accept yourself, admit your mistake and forgive yourself. You can learn the things you struggle with; often you just need to be taught it differently. BEST MOMENTS ‘You can lose bits of yourself (your soul) … especially as children when you´re put in a position you can´t cope with.’ ‘No brains the same, it´s like a fingerprint.’ ‘A lot of us are running on half batteries. ’ ABOUT V https://www.linkedin.com/in/vchamberlinkidd/ https://www.essentiallyevolving.co.uk/ V Chamberlin-Kidd Bio Hi, you amazing person, I'm V of Essentially Evolving. For this episode, Toni is joined by Heather White Boardroom Matchmaker, Networking & Personal Brand expert, and founder of the Boardroom Ready program. Heather explains how to read the room, break the ice, build your confidence and network in a strategic way. She also talks about leveraging online tools and the role networking plays in securing board places. Heather provides an invaluable insight into how the market works. KEY TAKEAWAYS Network in a strategic way. If you want to be a non-exec you have got to network, that is where most AIM and SMEs recruit their non-execs from. Sometimes you have to wing it a bit. You only have to be a step ahead of someone to be able to help them. Observe others and understand body language. Everyone lacks confidence in certain situations. Heather shares several simple ways to overcome this. Building relationships is the main aim of networking. Extra sales may be generated later, but that should not be your primary goal when networking. Be a good listener. Educate softly. The age of non-execs has fallen drastically, so there is now a lot of competition. BEST MOMENTS ‘To get over fear you´ve gotta put yourself into that fearful situation.’ ‘If you're not networked into chairs and non-execs, you just won't be considered.’ ‘Network, personal brand and LinkedIn are all key components of your success to find a non-exec role.  ’ About Heather White Heather White is a Boardroom Matchmaker, Networking & Personal Brand expert, and founder of the Boardroom Ready program, answering the question: "How do you get a boardroom opportunity if you have no previous boardroom experience?" As a networking & personal brand expert, with decades of experience helping thousands of professionals network strategically, Heather has frequent conversations with clients struggling to find a NED role without proven board experience. So, in 2017 she created the Boardroom Ready programme to address just this question. The Boardroom Ready programme is a personal development and leadership experience working with both HR and senior executives to help them gain board experience for internal succession planning as well as helping make the transition from executive to non-executive as a portfolio professional.  Since then, Heather has matched over 40 executives onto boards to gain valuable commercial board experience to support their portfolio and executive careers.  We understand the journey you are embarking on and have experts to support you every step of the way. For this episode, Toni & Lesley are joined by Andrea Edmondson a specialist performance consultant & coach who uses polyvagal theory to help people develop the skills to navigate their nervous system. Enabling them to enjoy a calmer and happier life. Andrea focuses on helping leaders do this. Once they change, the way they understand others and act changes too, which greatly benefits the people who work for them and improves society. KEY TAKEAWAYS How you behave impacts whether people feel safe, which in turn affects their behaviour. The autonomic nervous system drives our behaviour. If it is out of balance how we feel, and act is too. Your nervous system can be fixed. Most neurodiverse people have nervous systems that have become disorganised. The nervous system has 3 not 2 pathways. The vagus nerve splits in two. If you feel numb and are only going through the motions, work on your nervous system. If you´ve been in fight or flight for too long your gut doesn´t work properly. If your body lives in a state where it does not feel safe, e.g. there´s not enough food, it changes the way your brain is wired. BEST MOMENTS ‘Understanding how the body communicates with the brain is critical.’ ‘When the ventral vagal is out of reach you´re always striving but never satisfied.’ ‘The most important thing for the nervous system is another person's nervous system. ’ ABOUT THE GUEST Andrea Edmonson is a Performance Consultant & Coach who helps high achievers optimise their well-being and performance using a unique, neuroscience-driven approach. Her compassionate and pragmatic style attracts forward-thinking individuals and organisations from around the world wanting to get the best out of themselves without burning out. For this episode, Toni & Lesley are joined by Elizabeth McPhearson the CEO of Carers Plus Yorkshire which supports and provides recognition for 3000+  unpaid family carers. Some of whom are as young as 8 years old. In this eye-opening episode, Elizabeth shares the harsh realities of running a charity in the UK.  She also provides an insight into what it is like to be a carer while holding down a full-time job. Something that she and her sister are currently doing. KEY TAKEAWAYS If the 10.6 million unpaid carers suddenly said “We are not doing it anymore” the UK government would face an annual bill of £162 billion. Carers allowance is incredibly low, yet a significant percentage of carers do not qualify for it. The available help is very disjointed and hard to access. Helping carers to navigate the complex systems consumes a lot of time and resources. The government tends to fund things for short periods meaning that effective schemes have to be wrapped up after only a couple of years. Much of the work that charities do is heavily regulated which means they have to hire and pay qualified professionals and cannot use volunteers for most roles. When you become a carer your relationship with your loved one inevitably changes. When you are caring it is important to do something for you too. Elizabeth shares what she did. BEST MOMENTS “If you've got carers allowance and you get your pension, it stops.” “This short-term funding is just not good for any of us.” “(Caring is) It´s hard graft and it can cause you to lose your job, and you can be in financial hardship.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.carersplus.net/ Contact at Carers Plus - 01723 850155 staff@carersplus.net admin@carersplus.net ABOUT THE GUEST Elizabeth Mcphearson CEO of Carers Plus Yorkshire I am an unpaid carer for my mother who has dementia and extreme frailty, my sister and I are her primary carers and we both have other jobs, which can be very difficult to juggle at times. Therefore, I appreciate the difficulty in accessing services as well as understanding the emotional and physical impact it can have on you. I want to ensure that my voice is heard, my experiences are shared, and all those carers and vulnerable people we support are at the forefront of both health and social care agendas. My work with unpaid carers and families of all ages is part of what drives me to keep working hard, we need to keep unpaid family carers high on the political agenda. It could happen to any of us, and we need to have an accessible network of high-quality support to provide information, advice and emotional support that is free for those who need it the most.  Elizabeth’s LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/elizabeth-mcpherson-77913a44/ All other social contacts are @CPYorks WORK WITH ME If you're ready for greater clarity and confidence to create the freedom and alignment, you crave in in business and life. Diane Watson is a relationship-focused financial planner with over 30 years of experience and the author of the Amazon bestseller "She Can Prosper”. She joins Toni and Lesley to talk about financial empowerment, sharing invaluable insights on women's financial independence, the importance of financial planning, and overcoming societal barriers. From childhood money mindsets to practical tips for business owners, this episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to take control of their financial future. KEY TAKEAWAYS Early childhood experiences and parental attitudes significantly shape our financial mindsets and behaviours in adulthood. Women often face unique challenges in financial planning, including being more risk averse and juggling multiple roles as caregivers, professionals, and household managers. Financial education is lacking in schools, leaving many adults ill-equipped to handle personal finances and make informed decisions about money. Business owners, especially women, need to consider protective measures like insurance to safeguard their businesses and personal finances in case of illness or inability to work. The lack of financial knowledge can lead to stress, poor decision-making, and missed opportunities for growth and prosperity. Societal expectations and gender roles continue to impact women's relationship with money, often limiting their financial independence and decision-making power. Writing and sharing personal stories about financial journeys can be both cathartic for the author and inspirational for readers facing similar challenges. Networking and collaborating with like-minded individuals can provide support, inspiration, and opportunities for personal and professional growth in financial matters. BEST MOMENTS  "I think ultimately a lot of people get their information from their parents, don't they? Which is either a good thing or it's not a good thing." "I'm a passionate believer in people having wills, which most people don't know. You know, things like powers of attorney, which people think are only for the very elderly but they're not." "Money is fascinating, isn't it? And the way money plays out in relationships, and it's not just, um, heterosexual relationships." In this episode, Toni and Leslie talk with Irma Gomez, founder of Spanish Lessons York. Irma shares her inspiring journey from Mexico City to York, England, where she transformed her passion for teaching languages into a thriving business. Discover how Irma balances motherhood, entrepreneurship, and personal growth while creating a unique learning experience for her students. KEY TAKEAWAYS Irma's move from Mexico to York for education led to unexpected personal and professional opportunities, highlighting the importance of embracing change. Transitioning from corporate life to motherhood prompted Irma to reevaluate her priorities and create a business that aligned with her passions and family needs. Starting a local language teaching business required tenacity and creative marketing, including leveraging social media to find and connect with potential clients. The COVID-19 pandemic forced Irma to adapt her teaching methods, opening up new possibilities for online lessons and expanding her reach beyond local boundaries. Irma believes in the importance of knowing your market and understanding that your ideal client may have different needs and preferences than your own. Continuous learning and adapting to new technologies, like AI, is crucial for staying relevant and growing a business in the constantly changing digital world. Irma's approach to teaching Spanish goes beyond grammar, incorporating cultural elements and personal experiences to make lessons more engaging and relevant. Finding a balance between work and personal life is essential, as demonstrated by Irma's focus on family and pursuit of personal interests like baking. BEST MOMENTS  "I don't want to be skint, but I then knew that I could do something alongside motherhood because I didn't want to give up motherhood at all." "So it's teaching. It's definitely teaching. So I, I started to get as well, like qualifications to teach Spanish because of course I knew how to teach English because I did it." "Languages are my passion. So I keep training on things." "I think this age. Because I think it's  the here and now is what I like more. I already been however many years I was and did what I did and right now I'm more focused on the here and now." "And I think it's really important that when, you know, when you're trying to find a business or a job that it actually does light you up." ABOUT THE GUEST I'm Irma and I love making sure people who are learning Spanish have a wonderful experience and speak with confidence. Languages are doors that open your mind into other worlds. Learning a language keeps you fit and engaged, so having experienced that myself, I now make sure everyone who attends my lessons feel the same. Jane Verity Smart is an interior designer with a heart for healthcare spaces. In this episode, Jane shares her journey from corporate design to creating dementia-friendly environments. She reveals how personal loss fuelled her passion and led to a new venture in property staging. Jane talks about how she balances her thriving business with family life and gives valuable tips for success in the design world. KEY TAKEAWAYS Jane specialises in healthcare and dementia-friendly interior design, transforming spaces to boost occupancy rates and improve patient well-being. Her approach focuses on sustainability, acoustics, and nature-inspired elements to create calming environments for patients and staff. Jane expanded her business to include property staging, allowing her to work locally while supporting her family after her husband's passing. The importance of listening to clients and individualising design, even within corporate guidelines, has been key to Jane's success throughout her career. Jane uses AI tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Co-Pilot Designer to enhance her social media presence and streamline content creation. Balancing work and family life is crucial for Jane, who structures her day to include family time, dog walks, and focused work periods. Jane's definition of success focuses on happiness and fulfilment, prioritising being present for her family while running a successful business. Overcoming personal loss taught Jane the importance of living in the present and focusing on what truly matters in life and business. BEST MOMENTS  "Studies reveal that such environments can boost occupancy rates by up to 15 percent and foster tranquil atmosphere for patients. So it creates a really meaningful aspect to interior design." "I listen to what people say because so many people don't listen." "My definition of success, one of the biggest words is happiness because if you're not happy what's the point and that's another reason why I want to continue doing this and not just go and get a job and do something because it pays the bills because I want fulfilment in life." "I've been doing this for over 30 years and I started out working in an architect's practice, worked there for 13 years and won a competition to design Audi showrooms, the car, and did that for quite a long time and took them through three corporate identity stages." "You'd walk in the door and it would just smell really awful. And just look horrible as well, really clinical, very sort of hospital like, not homely at all, not somewhere that you wanted to go into, not somewhere that as a sort of somebody in their 20s or a child would want to go into." Toni and Lesley speak with Laura Mason, CEO of NYBEP, an organisation bridging the gap between education and business. Laura shares her passion for helping young people prepare for the world of work, touching on the importance of work experience, flexible employment, and empowering young voices. They also discuss today's youth's challenges and how businesses can play a crucial role in shaping their futures. KEY TAKEAWAYS NYBEP engages with about 40,000 young people annually, offering work experience, careers fairs, and employability skills training across Yorkshire and the North East. The organisation brings businesses into schools to demonstrate the real-world application of subjects like math, helping students understand their importance. Laura emphasises the value of multiple work experiences for young people, starting as early as primary school and continuing through age 19 and beyond. Flexible working arrangements, such as term time only contracts, can attract and retain talented employees, particularly women returning to work after having children. Language plays a crucial role in how young people, especially girls, describe their skills and abilities, highlighting the need for empowerment and self-awareness. Businesses of all sizes can contribute to youth development by offering work experience placements, even if it's just one or two positions. The transition from education to work requires young people to develop essential skills like punctuality, appropriate dress, and professional communication. Laura encourages women to be bold in pursuing leadership roles, emphasising the importance of taking chances and learning from mistakes. BEST MOMENTS  "We like to bring businesses into education and mix the two up so that young people can really sort of see and feel where they're going and what they want to do." "I fundamentally believe in work experience and I believe in work experience and multiple work experiences or experiences of workplace." "As women, we've got to promote women and we've got to protect ourselves and also make sure that we're careful with the language because we can be very quickly, you know, put somebody down, can't we?" "I think language, you're right. And, and believing that and not, not being too, not being too hard on yourself and not, you know, overthinking it." "It takes a village, doesn't it? And all of us play our part and say, this is what we want to do." In this exciting episode of Women on Purpose, hosts Toni and Lesley interview Dr. Bola Olabisi, founder of the Global Women Inventors and Innovators Network (Global WIIN). With 25 years of experience championing women inventors, Dr. Olabisi shares invaluable insights on overcoming challenges, securing funding, and the power of networking. From discussing AI's impact to encouraging young innovators, this episode is a must-listen for anyone with a groundbreaking idea or a passion for innovation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Global WIIN supports women inventors and innovators by providing networking opportunities, mentorship, and access to resources. Women often face unique challenges in securing funding and patenting their inventions, with only 8% of patents in Europe held by women. Many women's inventions focus on solving social problems and improving quality of life, rather than high-tech innovations. Collaboration and partnerships are crucial for success in bringing inventions to market. You have to build resilience and surround yourself with supportive people when facing setbacks in the innovation journey. Young innovators are bringing fresh perspectives to environmental and sustainability issues and should be encouraged to participate. AI and sustainability are becoming increasingly important topics in the world of innovation and invention. Global WIIN hosts annual events and awards to recognise and support women inventors from around the world. BEST MOMENTS  “Global win is spelled with a double I. So the two I's there is specifically for inventors and innovators. So that's where my passion lies. And then it's a network of women who have ingenious minds who are not afraid to go beyond the ordinary.” "Necessity is the mother of invention, the things that they came up with to make our lives a lot better, to make it easier for us." "I think that we certainly, I mean, at our event, we try to bring them on board. We have a particular section where we have a panel for younger people in universities to come and provide us with what their views are on certain issues and topics." "When somebody is saying no to me, I'm like, okay, maybe this is just not the right time. Yeah, I'm coming back." “AI is certainly here to stay and we need to know how to embrace that and learn more every day about it." "I want to just go for Queen Elizabeth because that comes to mind. We've just lost her. So yes, I would, I would, you know, if I could have dinner with the Queen, I would” ABOUT THE GUEST Dr Bola Olabisi FRSA is the Founder of the Global Women Inventors and Innovators Network which she set it up in 1998 in recognition of the challenges that women face in bringing commercially viable products to market. It's, you know, you go to trade fairs, and I was saying, oh, I'm looking for recycled lace." "In order to, you know, be able to accomplish something in life and to, to go, you know, as far as possible, you have to have an amazing support in your family." In this episode, Toni and Lesley interview career coach Bev Nickson. Bev shares her expertise in navigating career transitions, optimising LinkedIn profiles, and overcoming the challenges of job searching. With valuable insights on the importance of self-branding and maintaining a positive mindset, this episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to take their career to the next level. KEY TAKEAWAYS When applying for jobs online, ensure your CV is applicant tracking system (ATS) friendly by avoiding PDFs and excessive white space, as the computer scans for keywords. Highlight your unique selling points and transferable skills on your CV to stand out to potential employers. Embrace career changes as opportunities for growth and development, rather than viewing them as setbacks. Invest in your continuous professional development by identifying skill gaps and taking courses to fill them. Utilise your existing network, especially on LinkedIn, to explore new career opportunities and gain valuable advice. Be cautious when seeking career advice from family members, as they may prioritise their personal desires over your professional goals. Self-branding is crucial when establishing yourself as a consultant or entrepreneur, focusing on showcasing your expertise and successes. Maintain a positive mindset during career transitions by reframing unemployment as a time to explore new opportunities and focus on your strengths. BEST MOMENTS  "It's about saying what you can do and talking about the work that you've been doing with other people and the successes you've had." "If you can set that first goal of saying, right, what can I do? If it's a product, can I price it up? How much will sell? What, who else is a competitor around here? And what are they selling that? And can I offer something different than you're offering?" "A lot of families don't like you to move out of their comfort zone. And if that means that you have to work away or, or whatever, they do get a bit like, why don't you stay here? Why don't you just stay in the job? Or why don't you just stay and that's from their personal want for you, not professional." "Every day is a school day, especially with us." Join Toni and Lesley as they sit down with the creative and entrepreneurial powerhouse, Guna Meldere, for an engaging conversation about her inspiring journey from Latvia to Scotland. Discover the power of resilience, the importance of pursuing your passions, and the fascinating world of Human Design. Guna's unique insights and experiences will leave you motivated and eager to embrace your authentic self in both life and business. KEY TAKEAWAYS Embracing resilience and finding opportunities, even in challenging circumstances, can lead to personal growth and success. Working while studying can provide valuable real-world experience and a deeper understanding of your chosen field. Human Design is a system that helps individuals make better decisions by understanding their unique energy types and how they interact with others. Knowing your Human Design type can empower you to live more authentically and navigate life with greater ease. Building a business that aligns with your passions and strengths is key to long-term success and fulfilment. Recognising and honouring your natural talents and tendencies can help you create a more harmonious and productive work environment. Asking the right questions, based on an individual's Human Design type, can unlock their potential and foster better communication. Embracing your unique qualities and quirks is essential for personal growth and success, both in life and in business. BEST MOMENTS  "You don't want to put yourself in a box with human design. And with everything, like with any other tool, like also astrology or, or any like soul maps or whatever it is, right? You want it to help you to go back to you, who you truly are." "I feel that people are starting to live so much more free and just stepping into their power back. It feels like they're taking back the driver's seat for their life when they have their charts." "That's how I feel like when I start to be just aware because it's not like something that you need to start to live your human design or something. Yes, there can be happening, the conditioning, because, you know, a lot of times, especially projectors and manifesters are conditioned by other types, by generators and manifesting generators to do more, to be more, and they are always called like lazy ones, but actually they are not." "We don't want to hurt other people, but we want to express ourselves. We want to be true to ourselves, but we don't want to, you know, kind of make somebody else to feel not great. Or we want to show our feelings, but a lot of times, it is challenging." "I think it's really amazing that you didn't go to university at that point and you got a job. And I think that's so much more powerful, especially for young people these days is to go and get work under your fingernails and feel what it's like in the real world" ABOUT THE GUEST Guna Meldere is not just a creative powerhouse; she's also a renowned expert in web design, podcasting, and community building.
