Description

Welcome to A Battle Within! This is a podcast where Terry and Drew Niemann tell our stories and share the stories of our guests living with Traumatic Brain Injuries with an emphasis on Post Concussion Syndrome. We offer the trials, the challenges, the wins, and the lessons learned along the way. The conversations are real, raw and uncensored at times. We also explore what things are like for the caregivers, families and friends walking through this with the Warrior. We call these folks Battle Buddies.Through the podcast we aim to:1. Help others going through Post Concussion Syndrome and Traumatic Brain Injury develop a sense of community through the stories.2. Provide a greater sense of awareness with the "Invisible Injury". Living with a brain injury clearly indicated to us society has very little understanding.3. Get help ourselves!. We hope to learn by doing, and hopefully this will lead to further understanding.A Battle Within is a very intentional name. It comes from the fact that many with a Traumatic Brain Injury go through an ongoing private internal fight, a battle to find themselves again, or somebody new. Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies! Here we go with Episode 161. For today's conversation we had to go without Terry unfortunately, she was having a bad case of "Brain Drain."Despite that we are able to offer a fantastic conversation today with Heather Rendulic! This special Warrior takes us through her journey of suffering 5 strokes and having to experience an addition brain surgery at the ripe old age of Twenty-Two. These happenings occurred back in 2011 and she has been after it ever since.Heather takes us through those hard times in the beginning, the ongoing recovery and desire to have a positive outlook despite the harsh reality of the situation.Heather speaks open and honestly about the love or her parents as well as her husband, Mark who "sees" Heather for who she is.Since her injury Heather has developed a career in Human Resources, gotten married and written a book Headstrong- Through Life, Love and Brain Surgery with some cameo's each chapter from her parents. I love that they are included in the book to tell their side of the story.Notes and resources for this episodeConnect with us atabattlewithin.comand onFacebookand onInstagramat A Battle Within.Like to be featured on the podcast? Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies! As we all know, a TBI leads to so many things that are unexpected and frustrating. Aside from the medical component, this rings true in other areas of a Warriors life such as relationships and doing things you love.Today Terry and I explore this a bit as it pertains to hobbies and interests. We talk to what Terry has done to shift in this regard and learn about new things she has picked up since her injuries. We also pass along some examples of amazing things former guests have let us know about as well as some followers/ listeners who offered their new interests up.As we continue on with Brain Injury Awareness Month we wanted to highlight the fact that new, fun and interesting things can happen as well. We all need to be aware of that possibility as well.We want to hear more, so please add a comment to the episode on the website or on the socials telling us what you are up to these days!Notes and resources for this episodeConnect with us at abattlewithin.com and on Facebook and on Instagram at A Battle Within.Like to be featured on the podcast? Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies!Years ago we used to watch the Chicago Bulls play basketball quite often. At onw point during the Jordan days Dennis Rodman joined the team. The man was brought in purely for one reason - to rebound and he was amazing at it.Unfortunately rebounding is as big of a part of healing from a TBI as the setbacks themselves are. In recent times I feel that Terry has become pretty darn good at it, kind of like Dennis. We talk about this concept today and Terry tells us about how motivation is key, what she ultimately wants to achieve and about not accepting no along the way. Along with that Terry offers up many of the tools used along the way.Notes and Resources For This EpisodeConnect with us at abattlewithin.com and on Facebook and on Instagram at A Battle Within.Like to be featured on the podcast? Here we go with Episode 154!In recent times we have all been living our lives with a very real strong sense of uncertainty. Don't think anyone has really been unaffected by the pandemic.Unbeknownst to society at large, Living in the Ambiguity is something that runs rampant within the TBI world.Today Terry and I explore this concept a bit and we get to talking about or experiences and strategies related to the concept and how we have gotten to the point of being comfortable living in this space. In addition we pass along some tidbits about how fellow Warriors have helped and some strategies from a doctor who has studied the concept for those struggling or might need a reminder. We hope you get a few things out of the chat and find it helpful!Notes and resources for this episodeConnect with us at abattlewithin.com and on Facebook and on Instagram at A Battle Within.Like to be featured on the podcast? Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies! Here we go with episode 153 with Deb Brandon. We got to have this amazing conversation today due to previous guest and Battle Buddy Donna O'Connell Figurski and Terry and I are grateful as she put us in touch.Deb is a warrior who back in 2007 had endured three necessary brain surgeries in a three week window. We all know that one injury is enough let alone three! In recovery she had to take herself through much of it and found ways to help herself through dragon boat racing, her art and utilizing brain game apps on her phone. The former math professor tells us about her experience, new outlook on life, how she found support, and about her blog and book she has written in an effort to help others. As if that is not enough, she is busy writing part two of her journey.Notes and resources for this episodeConnect with us at abattlewithin.com and on Facebook and on Instagram at A Battle Within.Like to be featured on the podcast? Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies! Here we go with Episode 152It's been about 3 years since the last time we checked in with Terry to see how she views the world differently sine her injuries.Today we chat and try to figure out what is different today in the ways she sees things now and observations she has made since. One of those observations included the pandemic. Throughout these times general society got a taste of what it can be like being cooped up and how frustrating that can be.Aside from that, Terry talks to how she sees depression differently, her shift to more holistic ways of healing herself, her deeper appreciation for life and maybe most importantly the comfort found by knowing other Warriors.I also try to get to the bottom to see if Terry has actually found life has become better due to these difficult time ultimately. As always, Terry gives us her straight to the point answer that it is all about perspective and what you make of it.A shout out to Deb Brandon who will be on the program next week for influencing the topic of conversation!Notes and resources for this episodeConnect with us at abattlewithin.com and on Facebook and on Instagram at A Battle Within.Like to be featured on the podcast? Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies! Here we go with Episode 146!Back in 2013 I read a book that has been very influential on my life called Die Empty by Todd Henry. Looking back on it, I realized that I did so in the same window of time as Terry's first accident. Many of the thoughts and lessons in this primarily business book apply to life in general in my opinion as well.I still utilize many of the concepts today in my own life and even have Die Empty tattooed on my arm to remind myself. Some of the tenets in the book include living a life of no regret, living by design as opposed to by default and the topic we will discuss today. "Defining Your Battles"We learn some of the questions to ask yourself when determining what battles to fight and when in your recovery, what exactly does emptying oneself mean and Terry's perspective on the concepts offered as it relates to the Brain Injury community.Notes and resources for this episodeConnect with us at abattlewithin.com and on Facebook and on Instagram at A Battle Within.Like to be featured on the podcast?
