  • explaining why someone isn't getting a promotion
  • providing honest feedback on poor performance
  • respectfully challenging a client, customer, or colleague
  • confronting repeatedly unacceptable behavior, such as not keeping commitments, hoarding resources, hurtful language or even substance abuse.
  • discussing or breaking a "taboo" issue like dress or hygiene
  • acknowledging or admitting a mistake before it gets caught
  • asking for help
