46: 80s Diet Culture Time Capsule
Description
80s diet culture was confusing at best. And that’s from an adult woman’s perspective decades later! Imagine being a young girl and receiving messaging that tells you to both blend in and embrace your uniqueness. Good grief! Registered Dietitian, Amy Carlson, joins me for this episode. We’re taking a trip back in time—thanks to a pamphlet I was given at 10 years old that included diet, hair and skincare, and exercise tips so “you can, overall, look healthier, fitter, and prettier than ever before!” Oh yeah, it’s cringe! But what can we learn from this propaganda for the sake of ourselves and future generations? Be sure to tune into the follow up episode all about diet culture in the 90s!
In this episode, you will:
- Discover what young girls are being told now about body image and dieting in the 80s.
- Learn about or revisit popular shows, phrases, music, and… stickers?
- Uncover what was happening on a more global scale during the 80s.
*Please note that this episode contains topics such as anorexia and bulimia which may be sensitive for some listeners.
