Avoid Becoming a Victim of the Bottom Line

Leaders keep their eyes on the horizon, not just on the bottom line.

– Warren Bennis

THE BOTTOM LINE OF BLURRED LINES

I can recall a time when it was my first day at work for a particular company. I arrived on the job expecting to have my desk and computer setup and ready for me to use. What I received instead was news that I would have to provide my own laptop to work. Something I learned from this is that a lot of companies are looking for ways to help their bottom line.

WHAT IS THE BOTTOM LINE: The bottom line is what’s left over after calculating all of the profits and losses, this number will either be in the negative or the positive.

See by having the employees use their own personal laptops, the employer has less responsibility in regards to supporting the equipment from a financial or resource perspective. This in return helps with the employer’s bottom line, but can blur the lines between the employee’s work life and personal life.

SOME INDICATORS OF BLURRED LINES

You continuously work over 40 hours a week

No matter how much you complete at work it never seems to be enough

You don’t have much time for your family and friends

Your personal cell phone is used for work just as much if not more than it’s used personally

Task that were never a part of your job duties increasingly becomes a part of your job duties

Your personal car is used for work just as much if not more than it’s used personally

You have little energy to do the things you really enjoy doing

Even when you are off from work you feel like you are still working

There is something telling you the company/business is asking for too much

SET HEALTHY BOUNDARIES

To avoid becoming a victim of the bottom line you have to set healthy boundaries. A good place to start with setting boundaries is asking “why”. Why is it you are working for this company or building your business? Now, I can’t tell you what your “why” is for working, nor can I tell you what boundaries to set. What I can tell you is, in order to avoid being a victim of the bottom line you need to know your “why” for working.
