BYU (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) was ranked No. 7 nationally. As one of the few remaining undefeated teams in a major conference, the Cougars’ ranking validated their strong start and wins, including a key rivalry victory against Utah.

Texas Tech (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) followed closely behind at No. 8. The Red Raiders earned their spot with a resume featuring several impressive conference victories.

The simultaneous high rankings of these two teams set the stage for one of the biggest Big 12 matchups of the year: a top-10 showdown between No. 7 BYU and No. 8 Texas Tech that will significantly impact the conference championship race and their respective playoff paths.

For the Big 12, the new 12-team playoff format means the conference champion will automatically receive a berth, likely securing one of the four first-round byes if ranked high enough.
