Brad Templeton - SETI, Dark Matter & Fermi
Update: 2024-03-10
Description
Brad Templeton discusses extraterrestrial civilizations, the SETI Project, and the Fermi Paradox - and suggests that humanity's implicit bias about the evolution of life is leading us to look for aliens in the wrong places.
One hypothesis we'll be exploring is the “dark forest theory” that interstellar civilizations avoid detectable contact because of mutual distrust and potential threats to survival, and another is the "Zoo hypothesis" where ET leaves us alone to develop without interference. Other explanations are that most civilizations self-destruct before they become space-faring, and there's also the possibility that humanity is early or late to the game, and other civilizations simply aren't there.
Brad has also suggested a new explanation: that advanced interstellar civilizations are focused on harvesting dark matter around the edges of galaxies, and simply won't be found where SETI is currently searching.
Brad Templeton is a well-known software developer, internet entrepreneur, online community pioneer, publisher, writer, photographer, civil rights advocate, futurist, public speaker, educator and self-driving car consultant.
Brad has a Bachelor's in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a long career of remarkable achievements, including his current roles as a speaker, writer & consultant at Robocars.com, Chairman Emeritus of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Chair of Networks & Computers at Singularity University, and a former technical and board member at BitTorrent.com, self-driving car strategist at Google, advisor to Deep Map, Tilt Five, Quanenergy, and much more.
