IB History

This course is an in-depth study of the 20th century examining themes such as causes, practices and effects of wars, including World War I and II, Korea and Vietnam, the cold war and the rise and rule of single-party states, including Stalin, Hitler, Mao and Castro. Students will develop skills essential for the evaluation of different approaches to, and interpretations of historical events and topics. Continued emphasis will be given to analyzing sources as well as writing essays. Throughout the course students will be encouraged to enter imaginatively into the past. The course will be assessed internally through homework assignments, discussions, essays, quizzes, and other appropriate teaching assessments, as well as externally written examinations. All students enrolled in an IB subject must sit the external exam at the end of Year 2.

AP European History

The study of European history since 1450 introduces students to cultural, economic, political, and social developments that played a fundamental role in shaping the world in which they live. In addition to providing a basic narrative of events and movements, the goals of AP European History are to develop (a) an understanding of some of the principal themes in modern European history, (b) an ability to analyze historical evidence and historical interpretation, and (c) an ability to express historical understanding in writing. It is a recommendation that the student taking Advanced Placement European History would be better prepared to do so if they have already taken Advanced Placement United States History.
