1 Timothy 6:5–10 (NLT) - “...Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil…”

In today’s Daily Devotion, Pastor Sumrall draws a clear line between the desire to prosper and the love of money. Prosperity, when rooted in generosity and compassion, enables us to be a blessing, but the love of money is selfish; it seeks wealth for personal gain, not for God’s purpose.

Paul warned Timothy that this love of money is a trap, leading to ruin and destruction. It’s not money itself that’s evil, it’s the craving for it. Like hidden roots feeding a poisonous plant, the love of money quietly nourishes pride, greed and compromise.

True godliness, Paul says, is contentment, learning to be thankful and satisfied with what we have, trusting that God provides. Wealth used for God’s Kingdom brings joy and purpose. Wealth sought for self brings sorrow and ruin.

Let’s keep our hearts free from greed, live with contentment, and use every blessing God gives to lift others up.
