Proverbs 20:6 (NLT) – “Many will say they are loyal friends, but who can find one who is truly reliable?”

In this devotion, Pastor Sumrall shares a simple but powerful truth about friendship. Years ago in Hong Kong, he often returned to the same shop because the owner called him a “good friend” and promised a “special price.” Later, he discovered the same item sold for much less elsewhere—and realized that not everyone who calls you “friend” truly means it.

Life teaches us that many people want to be close because of what you can offer—your resources, your connections, or your influence. But genuine friendship is not built on benefit or convenience; it’s built on faithfulness and shared pursuit of God.

As Pastor’s grandfather wisely said, “If by the end of your life you have five true friends, you’ve been very blessed.” Real friends aren’t many—they’re rare. They’re the ones who stand by you, not because of what you have, but because of who you are and who you serve.

A reliable friend stays with you through joy and hardship—but never above their loyalty to God. Their love strengthens your walk with Him, not distracts from it.

So today, thank God for the true friends in your life—and be that kind of friend to others.
