Daily Zohar 4985

#190
And there the Shechinah was revealed for the need of that time, for Israel required her to comfort them from the sorrow of the destruction of the Temple. But at another time, the Shechinah was not revealed outside the Land. And for this reason, Jonah fled so that the Shechinah would not rest upon him and would not be revealed upon him, and therefore he went from the holy Land and fled. And this is what is written: “מִלִּפְנֵי יְהוָה”, “From before YHVH” (Jonah 1:3), and it is written: “כִּי יָדְעוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים כִּי מִלִּפְנֵי יְהוָה הוּא בוֹרֵחַ”, “For the men knew that he was fleeing from before YHVH” (Jonah 1:10 ).*
Notes:
This Zohar passage continues #189’s theme of the Shekhinah’s revelation outside the Land. Her appearance to Ezekiel on the river Kevar was a unique act to comfort Israel after the Temple’s destruction, but she normally remains in the Land of Israel (Malchut). Jonah’s flight (מִלִּפְנֵי יְהוָה) avoided her presence to evade prophecy.
#191
Come and see, just as the Shechinah is revealed only in the place fitting for her, so too she is seen and revealed only to a person fitting for her. From the day that Lot chose to turn to his sin, the Holy Spirit departed from Abraham. And when Lot separated from him, immediately the Holy Spirit rested in its place, that is, upon Abraham. And this is what is written: “וַה’ אָמַר אֶל אַבְרָם אַחֲרֵי הִפָּרֶד לוֹט מֵעִמּוֹ”, “And YHVH said to Abram after Lot had separated from him” (Genesis 12:1).
#192
Come and see: When Abraham saw that Lot returned to his evil ways, he was afraid, saying: Perhaps, God forbid, because of my association with him, I have lost, on account of him, the holy portion that the Holy One, blessed be He, bestowed upon me. When Lot separated from him, the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: “שָׂא נָא עֵינֶיךָ”, “Lift up now your eyes” (Genesis 13:14 ).
Notes:
This Zohar passage interprets (Genesis 13:14 ). Abraham feared that Lot’s sinful return (focus of outer vessel) would cost him the holy portion (Chessed, inner light) from the zivug with the Shechinah (Malchut). After Lot’s separation, YHVH reassured Abraham, restoring the zivug’s flow of Mochin, to Abraham’s cleaving to faith in the Land, contrasting Lot’s exile-bound path.
