Ep. 6: The Story of Levi Caroll and the Waterloo Poorhouse
Description
After a short hiatus, we return with Episode 6, a historical episode.
Before there was a hospital or mental facility or nursing homes in Waterloo Region - or really anywhere in Canada for the most part - there were poorhouses, a sort of one-stop-shop for the poor, the elderly and the castoffs of society.
This story is a deeper look into Waterloo's very own poorhouse, the first of its kind in Canada, with a focus on Levi Caroll. Levi left Maryland as a slave in search of the freedom he hoped to find in Canada and like many others like him, ended up at the poorhouse.
Join us as we head back to the 1850s, at the experiences of the "inmates" of Waterloo County House of Industry and Refuge and the lives they lived, for better or for worse.
