Confession

The confession is said privately. The audio file begins after confession.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

A brief silence is kept

Grant your faithful people, merciful Lord, pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O gladsome light of the holy glory

of the everliving Father in heaven,

O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,

and our eyes behold the vesper light,

we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by joyful voices,

O Son of God, Giver of Life,

and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalter

The appointed Psalm is read together

Psalm 38

1  O LORD, rebuke me not in your wrath, *

nor discipline me in your anger.

2  For your arrows have pierced me deeply, *

and your hand presses me down.

3  There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; *

nor health in my bones because of my sin.

4  For my iniquities have gone over my head; *

like a heavy burden, they are too much for me to bear.

5  My wounds are foul and festering *

because of my foolishness.

6  I am troubled and utterly bowed down; *

I go about mourning all the day long.

7  For my sides are filled with burning, *

and there is no soundness in my flesh.

8  I am feeble and sore broken; *

I groan because of the turmoil of my heart.

9  O Lord, all my longing is before you; *

and my groaning is not hidden from you.

10  My heart throbs; my strength fails me, *

and the light of my eyes, even it is gone from me.

11  My friends and my neighbors stand aloof from my plague, *

and my nearest of kin stand far away.

12  Those who seek my life lay their snares for me; *

those who seek my hurt speak of ruin

and meditate treachery all the day long.

13  But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, *

like a mute man who does not open his mouth.

14  Yes, I have become like a man who does not hear, *

and in whose mouth are no reproofs.

15  For you, O LORD, do I wait; *

you will answer, O Lord my God.

16  For I said, “Let them not rejoice over me, *

who boast against me when my foot slips.”

17  For I am ready to fall, *

and my sorrow is ever before me.

18  For I will confess my iniquity; *

I will be sorry for my sin.

19  But my enemies are vigorous and strong, *

and many are those who wrongfully hate me.

20  Those who render me evil for good *

accuse me because I follow what is good.

21  Do not forsake me, O LORD; *

O my God, be not far from me.

22  Make haste to help me, *

O Lord, my salvation. †
