Description

Jason Craig from Fraternus and Marc Barnes from New Polity, return to Vendée Radio to continue our discussion on guilds. In this second episode we discuss guild solidarity and guild charity, the suppression and dissolution of the guilds by the forces of oligarchic economic liberalism, and finally consider how guilds might be restored by Catholics today.

Works discussed include:

  • The Art of Solidarity in The Middle Ages - Guilds in England 1250-1550-Oxford University Press, Gervase Rosser

  • Venice as the Polity of Mercy: Guilds, Confraternities, and the Social Order, c. 1250-c. 1650 (Toronto Italian Studies)

  • The Two Cities: A History of Christian Politics, Andrew Willard Jones

Mr Craig is the editor of Those Catholic Men and Sword&Spade magazine, the author of Leaving Boyhood Behind (OSV 2019), and co-founder of Fraternus.  He has a Masters in Theology from the Augustine Institute.  Craig runs a small Grade A dairy with his family and hosts retreats and workshops through St. Joseph’s Farm.    https://fraternus.net/start-here/

Mr Barnes is an editor at New Polity: a journal and think tank that aims to investigate and construct a Christian postliberal worldview, recognizing that the defining characteristic of human societies is their fundamental orientation towards or away from God.  https://newpolity.com/
