Obviously one of the most iconic singers from one of the most iconic rock bands of all time was great to catch up with Ian, sounded in great spirits.

And as you hear, even as Ian approaches 79 years old, no plans whatsoever to retire.

But let's start with one of the most legendary vocalists of all time from one of the most legendary rock bands of all time, Ian Gillen of Deep Purple.

And I wanted to talk a little bit about the tour and the fantastic new record you've just put out.

Well, it's remarkable what you're doing at 79 years old.

You should be very, very proud.

And that dovetails in with the record.

The record is first thing on the record Ian is.

How do you properly say the title of it?

Is it equal one equals one?

Yeah, you know, it's like the second half of an equation, like three minus two equals one.

I mean, in this case, as I was sitting down so frustrated one morning, trying to get my office work out of the way before I could go out and play.

And I was trying to complete some stupid matrix with traffic lights or motorbikes.

I can't remember.
00:04:25
I haven't realized I'm trying to prove that I'm a human being to a robot.
00:04:32
And I thought, I just got to stop.
00:04:34
This is just going to stop.
00:04:34
Anyway, life was full of so many unnecessary bureaucratic and electronic complications.

So I drew this long equation ridiculous with symbols and.
00:04:45
It's a load of nonsense that did actually equals one just to show how I'm necessarily when it could have just been three minus two.

So that it's equals one equals one.
00:04:56
What is the origins of the record in terms of the writing and the creation of the record because.
00:05:03
Deep purple have been very active making some really good records in recent years.
00:05:08
And they seem to kind of come out of nowhere.
00:05:11
All of a sudden, we hear that there's a record coming in this phenomenal material comes out.
00:05:16
So when did you start working on this?
00:05:17
When did you, how did this one come together that you knew that the band would make another record?
00:05:22
Well, we never really make plans.
00:05:26
It's just when we're in the mood.
00:05:29
And there was lots of encouragement because a couple of years ago, we got a news, a new guitar player Simon McBride came into the band to replace Steve Morse and.

Oh, man, just it was like when you, when you change things around a little bit, the human chemistry changed and.
00:05:50
Man, it was just unbelievable.
00:05:51
The energy that came into the band.
00:05:54
It was like a new life.
00:05:55
So needless to say, there was not a lot of ideas flying around.
00:05:59
So we just went into the writing room and we spent 10 days and we went back and spend another 10 days and then we had.

14 songs that we were off.
00:06:10
We we arranged them with Bob as an offer producer and we learned them and we were in the studio, maybe album in 10 days and it was.

It was an exciting experience to get back to some the style that was different to what we had with Steve.

There's no comparison.
00:06:30
You can't compare musicians really on in that way, but we suddenly found ourselves with material that was much more compatible with the stuff we would.

We were doing in the 70s and so it's just lots and so well on in the live show and it's the band is cranking right now.

Ian, I got to tell you I listening to the record and and you're new, as you mentioned, your newest member is Simon McBride on guitar and.

It really more so than and I don't I love the recent records and this is no slag at all on those records or Steve in any way it was obviously a brilliant player in his own right.

But listening to this man, it was like it was totally more so than anything.
00:07:29
It was still it was still current, but man did it channel going back to you know in rock and that whole period machine had period of the band.

And it was this and the interplay between him and dawn.

They really get to play on this record some I mean everything really kind of stretches out and it really is like classic purple.

That's right.
00:07:45
The thing I like about this particularly from a writing point of view when I when I sit down right in my parts, you know the singing bits.

It kind of went where you want it to go.
00:07:56
That's what I like about the construction of the songs.

There were no.
00:08:00
It wasn't angular.
00:08:02
It wasn't jazzy.
00:08:02
It wasn't progressive.
00:08:03
It was just.
00:08:05
It goes where you want it to go.

And that that was that's what makes it so similar to the stuff we were doing in the 70s.

It just was pleasing in that respect.

So yeah.

And those those guys are amazing together.

And it's really set us on fire again.

It's it's very very exciting times.

I mean, you know, I mentioned your birthday recently, but but the other component of this is vocally.

You you you still sound like Ian Gillen.

You know you're still Ian Gillen.

So that's a big part of it as well.

And you know, what do you tribute that to is you've gotten older being able to hold on to to your voice like you've had like you do.

Well, I have no idea really.
00:08:58
I think I drink better whiskey these days than I used to.
00:09:04
And no, seriously, I think it's it's the old saying you know, use it or lose it.

And I use it a lot.
00:09:11
We do a lot of live touring.
00:09:15
And so I keep myself in shape and keep the voice in shape.

And it's I think if you have long, long layouts.

I know a lot of singers who stop for a year or two and then 70 find eight.

They can't get it back.
00:09:31
And I that kind of scares me a little bit to take that much time off.

So I think yes, it's the amount of live work that's what keeps a guy.

See, that's interesting too, because I've talked to singers as they've gotten older and some will insist on three, four, five days off between gigs for recovery.

And others, it sounds like you're of this school that feel like no, I've got to it's a muscle.
00:09:56
I got to keep working it.
00:09:57
It's got to stay on it.
00:09:58
So it sounds like that's really where more you're at on it.

Yeah, I think I think to a certain extent, I mean, no one's there's no one's going to be physically physically.

I mean, I've got I used to be a polevolta and an athlete when I was a kid and I had to give up polevolta two years ago.

So I can't do that anymore.

And I think you have to realize to work within your limits, but at the same time, those limits need not be sort of diminished too much.

And I think if he keeps fit, I feel strong.

And so that's, that's necessary with a style of singing I do because it all comes from the diaphragm and the core strength.

So I mean, good shape.

Is there a song that's in the set that you have to play every night, one of the big, deep purple staples.

That's the biggest struggle for you though when it comes up in the set, you're like, OK, here comes again.

No, no, no, we've got a really good show.

I'm enjoying it from the beginning to end.

I mean, I mean, probably, Molly, we start with.

We kick off with highway star.
00:11:06
And, you know, right at the end, we're doing space trucking and stuff like that, which is killer.

I mean, it really takes a lot of strengths to sing that song.

It may not, it may sound relaxed on the record, but believe me, it's like a duck on water.

There's a lot going on under the surface.
00:11:23
So no, I mean, I'm happy with the set.

And there's nothing holds any great fears.

It's enjoyable.

Going back to the band, of course, the rhythm section, one of the grades of all time, both of them in Roger and, of course, still being there anchoring things,

but going to your newest member again, Simon McBride on guitar.

I mean, coming into purple in the guitar spot is a huge, huge, huge role, obviously.
00:11:53
And a role that's going to be under a big spotlight and a lot of scrutiny.

But, but I, and I had not heard.
00:12:00
I'll be honest, I had not heard of Simon prior to him joining the band, but I'm blown away by what he's done on the record.

I've not yet seen you live with him.
00:12:07
But where did you find him?
00:12:08
Is it true that Steve actually recommended him at one point?
00:12:12
No, no, no, no, no, Simon's from Belfast, Steve and he had never crossed paths before.
00:12:18
I think I think Steve that had ever been either.
00:12:22
I worked with Simon a few years ago.
00:12:25
I was doing a solo tour in Eastern Europe, Poland and Czechoslovakia and places like that.
00:12:31
And I hired the Don Aeri Orchestra, a Don put an orchestra together for me.
00:12:35
And Simon was the guitar player.
00:12:38
They've known each other for some time.
00:12:40
And I just saw Wow.
00:12:42
And there were elements of his play that were just impressed me so much.
00:12:47
Of course, he was quite constrained working with an orchestra.
00:12:51
But I noticed straight away his articulation.
00:12:54
And that always impresses me.
00:12:56
Somebody who can play their instrument and doesn't fake it because a lot of people, you know, fake what they do with shredding and stuff like that.

And I think he was so articulate with his playing that I had no hesitation recommending him for the job when Steve couldn't continue.

So that's where he, whatever I find him.
00:13:19
But to be honest, Don Aeri found him first.
00:13:21
And he's been around.
00:13:24
I got a message from Joe Satriani on my birthday a few days ago.
00:13:28
And he said, oh, you know, the usual stuff and everything.
00:13:32
And you're a new killer guitar player.
00:13:36
And so I told Simon.
00:13:38
And he said, wow, Sat was one of my heroes when I was a kid.
00:13:43
In fact.
00:13:44
And he showed me an identity still online, but it's of Simon look like as a 12 year old boy playing on a talent show and a TV talent show in Ireland.

And he's playing such movie.
00:13:59
And it was just amazing.

And Satriani said, hell, 12 years old, I was still catching frogs.

It's fantastic.
00:14:09
I mean, I know Joe very well.
00:14:11
And that's he's a great guy.

And obviously an influence on so many players.

I just saw him recently.
00:14:18
He's out doing this tour with Sammy Hagar.

And I'm actually I'm actually going to Japan for the first time ever.

The band Sammy and Joe and the guys invited me to go with them on their tour in Japan next month.

I've never been so I'm spending some time with those guys.
00:14:35
They love Joe in Japan.

They do really do.
00:14:37
Yeah, he's very popular.

Joe did those dates in Japan when Richie left the purple Joe Joe.

And did that did that Joe with us at the recommendation of Mr.

Fantastic guy.

I love him to death.

Yeah, he's got history with you guys.

I know and you're one of the few bands Joe was actually in at one point because he's mainly been a solo act, of course.

Yeah, absolutely.

And that was a very, very happy period with Joe.

It was wonderful.

Yeah.

No, he always talks fondly about it as well.

You know, Ian, I look at when I look at purple in recent years.
00:15:15
I look at two pretty big things happening that seemed to have reinvigorated the band.

You've mentioned Simon McBride's arrival, which clearly has done that.
00:15:24
And all you got to do is listen to the record to hear that.
00:15:27
But the other big thing and you just mentioned this guy a second ago that I think and correct me from wrong seems to have really driven the band to want to be so creative at this point in your career in the studio.

And that is Bob Ezren producing the records and he has the last few records.
00:15:43
But can you talk about the importance of Ezren coming into the picture because you guys never worked with him back in the in the seventies.
00:15:51
But to work with him now, he seems to really have put a big imprint on the band and really kind of been one of the reasons and talking to Roger and Ian one of the real reasons why you guys really like to record right now.

Is that true?

Absolutely.
00:16:06
It's one of the reasons and very, very important.
00:16:10
We never really had a producer as such.
00:16:12
We had we worked through some great guys, Michael Brack took for example, and then Roger self produced us for a while and, you know, the thing is deep purple never really had a leader in the band is not it's a very sort of democratic thing.

We actually vote on things if we undecided, but you can't vote on an arrangement.

So what happened used to happen.
00:16:36
We used to spend days sometimes weeks on a song just trying to get the arrangement right the song itself was probably written in 20 minutes, but then not sorting out the arrangement.

Sometimes you're publishing a song that's not quite so good and kind of cure the problems with an arrangement.

Two of the things that Bob brought in was one.
00:16:59
He's decisive and so we got momentum in the writing room in the arrangement room, I should say.

And he listened to this and that you go, I'm not like in that.
00:17:12
And then he go, OK, that's good.
00:17:14
Yeah, let's do it that way.
00:17:15
And that was it.
00:17:16
And it's done instantly decision made and no offering so good.

That way you keep the sharpness and you keep the edge on what you're doing.

It doesn't become suddenly a mechanical exercise.

The other thing was that Bob has given us the best sound we've ever had.

And that is really important.

The way he balances the band and the mixing and the final sound.

I thought when we worked with him, first of all, on now what that was the case and it's just got better since we've worked with him.

Now he understands the band and he's he's experienced.

I mean, it's it's it's a whole list of pluses with Bob.

You can't fail to have a good sounding record and you can't fail to that he's going to get the best out of you.

You can't ask for more than that.

It's it's fantastic.

And I think the people saying, Oh, is he like a six member of the band.

No, he's not.
00:18:21
He's actually a leader.
00:18:22
He's a maestro.
00:18:24
And so he's a conductor more than that.

And you can see in the sense that, you know, he, he just gets the best out of us.

And that's what a good producer does.

So I can't praise him highly enough.

I just find it really interesting that a band like D purple that are, you know, this far into your career.

And it's it's just incredible run and where you're at now and Ezren, who also, you know, Ezren started in whatever 1970 or what have you that all of these decades later.

That that both both the band and the producer are very much at the top of the game in terms of what they're doing in terms of making new music.

That's incredibly rare.

Most, at least to my ears, most bands that have been around 50 years plus.

It's like, Oh, this stuff now isn't at the par of what they were once doing, but to have both the band's performance and writing and then a producer who also is not necessarily like the new young hot guy coming together,

having never worked but coming together at the towards the back end of the career.

And it was yelling so well.

I find really interesting and really cool.

Well, it is.

You're very observant and that's very true.

And there's certainly a feast.

There's a spark and the whole situation is on fire.

I've never known anything like this in 69.

It's just so exciting.

The band is cranking.

The live stuff is great.

The new we're doing five new songs in the show from equals one.

And we've never, ever done that before.

Never because the songs that we've done on other albums have not been really compatible with the stuff that people are mostly familiar with from the 70s.

And so it didn't really work.

It sounded like an ill fitting jacket, you know.

And so right now they slot in perfectly with the classics as what I call the classics and they're right up there.

There's no diminution of what you might call.

What comes across is it just it matches it matches perfectly.

And so it flows.

I've never been so excited.

Yeah, I can hear it in your voice and I can hear it in the record.

What what is beyond beyond Ezra and beyond Simon's arrival.

A lot of bands with a catalog like Deep Purple has would never even bother.

And I know a lot of them.

I talked to a lot of them.

They don't even bother making new music because they can't get it over live against the catalog, which everyone comes to see.

It doesn't at least in America get a real airplay or sales.

And they just don't see the point in doing it.

There's others that feel like it's just something they do and they need to do clearly Deep Purple or more in that camp.

But what is the drive to continue to add to the catalog.

Because I would imagine making this set list you're out on an amphitheater tour right now.

You got to have the big hits in there and you've got so many of them creating that balance.

And then every couple years adding new songs to the mix.

It's got to be challenging.
00:21:49
But what is the drive for the band to continue to create new music as opposed to just do the catalog.

Okay, good question.

The thing is you need some I understand what you're saying about the other bands and I do understand I get that because you need the reward.

You need the reward of audience appreciation.
00:22:10
That's important.
00:22:12
And if you only get an appreciation for the old stuff, then that's what you tend to stick to.

And it knocks the stuffing out of you.
00:22:19
The drive to create new material.
00:22:21
We've been lucky in support of the world is a big place and we travel around it every we go everywhere.

And it's we have a variety of audiences and it's also true when you said very briefly, then you hit on a really important point and you said particularly in America.

And that is the case that America is very much hope on the classic rock kind of thing for bands like us.

And so the media focus has always been on that and very little attention has been played to new material.

A half of that problem is because of the bands themselves are during new material that really is not compatible because people grow up.
00:23:12
They evolve and then their style changes and their abilities change.
00:23:18
And they see things in a different way.
00:23:20
And so the music comes out and not so rebellious.
00:23:22
They may be a little more saved and all they know become more Hispanic, better than playing and lose touch with the crowd because they're good.

They're more like jazz and they're pleasing themselves.
00:23:34
Well, and about 20 years ago, we had a weird experience in France and that was in Marseille, a whole college turned out to watch this performance.

And they'd seen us doing some stupid little lunchtime TV thing where we've made smoke on the water and a jokey kind of way and they loved it.
00:23:54
So we had an audience of 18 year olds and that's straight like wildfire around Europe, South America, Japan and Russia and everywhere in the Middle East faces we play it all over the world,

even though you've been with some of us.
00:24:09
And so that was encouraging that they were listening to the audience was responsive.

And around about that time, we started looking up with Bob and things started changing.

And so we had the confidence.

But the answer to your question, really is confidence and reward.

And we've got the reward of some smiling young faces.

I think what is happening here and we've only been briefly on this halfway through this.

This summer tour in the States, we begin you see glimmers of that just the beginnings of it.

And I'm hoping against hope that we're going to find some younger people come to the show because around the rest of the world, the energy they bring we needed.

Yeah.

And people should come see what you guys are doing because it is real.

It's live.

There's no bullshit going on.

There's no tapes.

There's no tracks.

There's no nothing.

It's a band plugging in extraordinary musicians playing extraordinary music.

And that is, but unfortunately a bit of a dying breed and a dying act here in the US, at least in around the world.

So I absolutely love that you're still out there and still doing it and making music and playing quickly tying in on what you said before I did I did have the extreme honor to spend some time with you guys on the road a number of years ago through Mexico.

I don't know it was about five years ago or so we have that wonderful dinner one night that I'll never forget and I thank you for that that tour that tour was called the long goodbye which referenced and and end to the band a long farewell.

But for whatever reason the way the songs are written the way this guy plays they they let him play and he interacts with dawn airy there's a great purple keyboard guitar break trade off throughout the record it really.

Yeah so I guess we'll start with you Neil how did the idea for you and rival sons team up and go out together come about.

I don't know for certain but it was an idea that was offered up by our booking agent and I guess you know there had been some conversations and.

It seemed like a immediately like a good idea because I imagine we have a lot of mutual fans I see plenty of rival sons t shirts at our shows and.

You know that I think that's pretty much the way it went down but I I could be mistaken.

Yeah yeah definitely it was the same thing for us Neil.

We always it doesn't matter meet and greet sort of shows you always see collect shirts and you know your guys shirts are really easy to catch because it's you know it's the clutch logo and you can see it from a mile away so when.

It really came about it was the agents I think talking and management you know people talking about okay well what would be a good play because we've got our audience.

You know clutch has their audience because it's like there's so much.

Cross collateral you know and it's like it was really about putting when it was presented to us it was a no brainer like oh my god yes of course you know like who doesn't like clutch anybody who likes rock music is into action so it's like.

Especially found out that it was going to be you know you guys celebrating a blast tyrant you know and then.

For us doing one of our seminal records is like this is going to be an amazing diet for rock fans.

And Jay what record are you guys doing it are you focused on head down.

We're really looking at we're really celebrating the great western battery.

The other thing I see as far as why this works so well and I was excited about it when I first heard about it and and Neil I start with you on this one.

When you look at both bands whether it's rival sons or clutch both of you in your history in your career and and Neil your band's career is longer than rival sons at this point but.

You you work well on a lot of different styles and genres and with a lot of different bands like in your history.

Of course you've done headlining shows but you played with a wide variety of different sorts of bands and on festivals surrounded by different styles of bands as well.

But it seems to always work I at least to me that one of the connections here is that both bands play a style of rock that's just so true and honest and real that it connects to a lot of different people and can work on a lot of different levels.

Well I'd like to think that you know musical sincerity plays a role in that I mean I don't think we certainly didn't have a conversation about what kind of band we want to be we were just like emulate the bands that we like and make and perform music that we enjoyed doing.

And I think people are hip to that and even you know we could do some we just did a bunch of extreme metal fest in Europe and even the most die hard metal fan you know might want to break from that and listen to something that swings for half an hour.

So I think it's never a good idea to pigeonhole yourself by saying oh I don't want to do that show or I don't want to talk with that band or what have you because at the end of the day.

A set of ears is a set of ears and you can head you can do yourself of the service by only playing to a certain audience and preaching to your own choir is important to get out of your comfort zone and you know keep it simple and have fun.

And Jay you guys with rival sons have clearly done that over the years I mean you did a run with STP not too long ago you're out opening for smashing pumpkins not too long ago I mean is the appeal of of teaming up with another act I would imagine you know is established as each your bands are that there's still that opportunity like you said you see each other's t shirts at shows but there could be a good percentage of people out there rival sons fans turning up.

Hadn't seen clutch or hadn't seen him in a long time and vice versa I would imagine doing a co headline like this and the ones you've done in the past are really about that right growing the band and growing the base.

Well immediately that was one of the things that was attractive and made the most sense.

You know what like what Neil had just said about you know you never sat around and had a conversation with the band about like what type of band do we want to be it's just more it's more about well this musician brings you know these ingredients you know and this one this person brings these ingredients and then you put it together and that's who we are.

But with this bill in particular I think that it was so attractive because I've always considered the type of music that we do we're we've always been the trenches and it doesn't matter like it doesn't matter who we're opening for who we're out on tour with if it's like when we were out with Sabbath we're playing the 40 80,000 people a night and it's like that but what we do on stage is still that same thing.

It doesn't change according to the venue we just do what we do and and I've always seen as I've always seen rival sons as a little bit of an outlier because we don't necessarily fit.

Snuggly in any you know subgenre of what rock is clutch I see that same thing and that's the way I've always seen it you know clutch has an outlier mentality for me as a listener that's really attractive because they're authentically themselves even though there are these other you know there are these influences you near them but what they do has always had a real.

I don't know like a like a like a trench mentality you know for me Neil like it's as somebody who's listen to you guys records for so long so when the idea of teaming up came to the table it was like yeah that's that's somebody that we're going to fit with really really well and I feel like the audience is going to take it the same way.

Well to that point I'm going to go to each you with this and I'll start with you Neil when did rival sons first come on your radar what was the first your first exposure to them do you have a lot of history with them.

Well I think we have no shortage of mutual friends in a long history but as far as bands you know the each band goes I was introduced to them the first time actually I heard the name was when we were in the United Kingdom and there was a clutch fan who asked me if I heard of rival sons and I maybe they just done a tour there and I heard the name like over and over again.

Just in a matter of a couple weeks until that's kind of like you know proof of concepts right there if you know clutch fans are asking me if I've heard of this band that they just saw and how great they were and really that that was my introduction was word of mouth and that's that's always the best promotion for any band.

And Jay for you what was your your first exposure to clutch.

I think that it would have been coming from the high desert and from the mountains where I'm from there's a lot of dirt bites there's a lot of gear heads and I think it was my buddy that rides in the checkers.

John Zuber a huge motorcycle club like the foremost off road and longest running and most exclusive motorcycle club.

I remember him talking to me about it and and that was back in I think 99 or so and then clutch really got on my radar when we played.

I mean, you know, so hearing the records over here here and there, but I think it was when I got to catch a little bit of the set on our first European tour when we were out opening for.

Judas priest we made a stop off at the ask and a rock festival and so that was I believe that was 2011 when you guys played that.

But I got to catch a little bit of the set and it was like oh yeah.

Yes, this is this is really good music.

Neil tell the audience if you will how this is going to work are you guys alternating who closes is one band closing every time or the are the set list going the set length is going to be equal across the board.

Well, I mean, I think we've figured out everything that can be figured out in theory.

I think the calls on who closes is this kind of left up to the local promoters and the agents, I mean, it's probably the same in both bands is neither here nor there.

I mean, sometimes it's you're going to you're going to do your set, you know, regardless.

And I'm going to I don't I don't really think playing second of three or third of three makes much difference.

And the set length I think are the same and you know it's for us it's just trying to keep it as simple as possible.

That's that's always kind of been our mantra.

Well, we've got there are two different acts for certain legs of the tour.

And you know, we've played with blackstone cherry many times, but we've never been able to play with who man choose and I've got friends in that band.

So that's that's going to be a really great compliment in that as well, but yeah.

Yeah, you know, what Neil was saying about like, you know, going, you know, closing the show or going second to last.

For us, it's definitely that thing of local promoters and say, who's got the who has the more recent strongest numbers in the market and say it's a it's a real.

It's just a relief and a simple numbers game that's it just makes everything easier going like all right, cool.

So when when we aren't closing, it's it's really cool for me because once you get the job done, it's like there's there's work time and then there's Miller time.

And so it's really cool to be able to know that we get to finish, you know, our set on certain nights and then I get to stand side sage and watch clutch play,

And I don't know who man choose music too well, but I do know blackstone cherry, they're fantastic band, but what I like about this across the board is, I mean, this is a.

So what is you know what's the plan going forward for the band are you looking because you guys also started your own label imprint and started re issuing some stuff.

So we started sacred tongue recordings as a means to handle all of our all of our older catalog and and as the the rights and the licenses to those early records reverber back to us,

we you know we made those deals early on with the express intent of being able to handle our own catalog.

You know at some point and so when those contracts matured we set in place with 30 tigers for distribution our own label.

So you know we keep releasing as they revert back to us now with what's from Valkyrie that's still under control of our first record label which is earache records.

So based on that record we're not releasing that anniversary edition yet because it's that hasn't reverted back to us.

But moving forward I think you know we're we're minded to maybe do some live recordings and some special printing.

Of like even totally as simple as like our own playlist you know a handful of curated rival song songs and just printing that way just because it's fun to do it for art sake.

You know you have these albums and you you have these collections and to play around with it because there are people out there just like what Neil was talking about who even though it might not be as convenient.

But my preference is still CD but it's funny because in talking to people I meet people all the time like CD sales are starting to increase for the first time in the last couple of years.

And now cassettes have become a thing and you got people putting out music on cassettes and making compilation tapes and all of that.

So you know it really is kind of the wild west out there but to me I'm just happy that people that there's still people out there that physically want to own the music because like you guys I'm sure I grew up holding it on wrapping it looking at the liner notes reading the credits.

I mean that's a really important thing to the ownership of music so you know Neil you guys have been at this a little longer than rival sons have it's got to be cool to kind of see that evolution.

It is you know I never would have thought it like anyone else that would play out the way it has but you know I remember buying my first CD you know our very first albums were released on cassettes because not because it was novel or retro which is that was the medium.

And then there was a period of time of band said oh I can put 75 minutes of music on a CD and then you got some overblown records that should have been half that length.

And then but I still think the vinyl format of you know the 45 40 minutes is sort of like an ideal amount of time.

I know that was an issue of the manner of the way vinyl works but I just think it's a good template even when you're writing music that will ultimately end up on a digital playlist to think of it.

In a way of two sides you have a side A inside B and there's some sort of musical plot arc that runs the course of that and I don't know if that's just because I'm showing my age or that there's just some kind of universal appeal of that.

Who comes out and supports live music because the privilege of getting up being able to write songs and get up on stage every night and like you know basically lead a party.

It's a good life and I just want to say thanks to everybody that still continues to believe in and support live music I believe it's a vital part of our.

Of our social fabric and rock is a real thing and people both us and clutch and black so chair to a man chew that are going to be on this run.

We had hinted that there's no smoke and mirrors it's just people getting up there with their instruments doing whatever they have to do to make it work and some of that energy.

And I yeah I swore we exchanged info and I had his info and I may have lost it and had it at one point but I'm glad we were finally able to reconnect with him because it was funny when I had him on the TV show.

We had him as a guest and again it's got to be 12 13 years ago he said to me afterwards when we wrapped up shooting he goes because you could hear he's pretty like just a straight shooter regular dude he's like.

Man I can't believe you guys just had me on a TV show I got what do you mean because nobody puts clutch on TV because no it's as a most exposure this band had.

Because they're very you know they're very DIY band you know they just do their own thing and they operate and they do very well and they've built a great audience but they're just like that kind of band and I just laughed and found that so funny I never forgot about it.
