Los Angeles City Council Approves Major Rent Control Update: Capping Annual Rent Increases, Removing Utility ChargesThe Los Angeles City Council has approved a significant update to the citys Rent Stabilization Ordinance, marking the first major change in over four decades. The new proposal caps annual rent increases for many apartments between one percent and four percent, removing additional charges for utilities like electricity and gas. The updated formula will calculate allowable increases based on ninety percent of the Consumer Price Index. Previously, annual rent hikes could range from three percent to eight percent, with an additional one to two percent for utilities. The new ordinance now heads to Mayor Karen Bass for her signature or veto, and if signed, will take thirty days to go into effect.
