Potato prices tumble as bumper harvest leads to oversupply
Description
South African potato prices have plummeted to between R3.50 and R4 per kilo, less than half of what they were a year ago and well below production costs. The dramatic drop, driven by an oversupply following a bumper harvest, has left many farmers struggling to stay afloat. Lester Kiewit speaks to Food Lover’s Market buyer Paul Rauch about how the glut is affecting farmers, what it means for consumers, and how retailers are responding to the sudden shift in the potato market.
