Push for nationwide type 1 diabetes screening
Update: 2025-11-26
Description
Health advocates are pushing for a nationwide screening program to test every Australian child for type 1 diabetes. Currently, most of the 3,000 Australians diagnosed annually with type 1 diabetes are not identified until they require hospitalisation with life-threatening conditions. Experts believe 25,000 Australians are living with undiagnosed type 1 diabetes, with proposed testing methods including heel pricks for newborns and saliva swabs for infants.
