Recovering From Perfectionism
Description
“Perfectionism can be a killer for entrepreneurs.”
— Julie Greenham
For a long time, perfectionism had been held up as a positive trait, something that drove people to achieve greatness.
The reality? Isn’t so rosy.
Perfectionism is driven by the internal pressures and unrealistic expectations we put on ourselves, and stems from a fear of being judged, rejected, or seen as a failure.
It can develop as a reaction to our childhood experiences. It can be restricted to certain activities, such as those relating to our work, or extend to all realms of our lives.
Perfectionism doesn’t make you better. It just makes you stop trying.
When I was a perfectionist, if I made a simple mistake or got tripped up on a word while doing a live video, I’d stop recording and pretend I’d been disconnected!
In an ‘all or nothing’ mindset, everything is either perfect … or absolute garbage. This allows no room for errors. Which means that there is no room for growth.
Perfectionism doesn’t drive productivity. It destroys it.
If you spend six hours tweaking a promotional graphic to make it perfect, what other tasks aren’t getting done? Does it matter if the text is misaligned by one pixel? People will look at the image for a few seconds, at most.
All of the tiny details you get caught up on mean nothing in the bigger picture of your business.
Perfectionism doesn’t make you more likeable.
Do you know what makes people likeable? Relatability.
Do you know what’s not relatable?
Perfection.
Being authentic and vulnerable helps other people connect with you. That is more important than having them believe you’re perfect.
