SLAPP Lawsuits — a Victim’s Story of Her Fight for Free Sp...
Description
Wisconsin is one of only 16 states in the union that doesn’t have an anti-SLAPP law. SLAPP stands for “strategic lawsuit against public participation,” in other words, a frivolous legal action intending to stifle free and lawful speech. Shereen Siewert, founder and editor of the Wausau Pilot and Review, one of her reporters and the publication itself, were served with such a defamation lawsuit by state Sen. Cory Tomczyk several years ago, and finally this past September, Wisconsin appeals court upheld a lower court’s dismissal of the lawsuit.
Monday Buzz host Brian Standing spoke with reporter Jim Malewitz who wrote about this issue, and Siewert’s experience, in the online publication Wisconsin Watch.
In this post, Wednesday Buzz host Nicholas Wootton spoke with Siewert about how the lawsuit affected her, her family, and her reporter. She is now championing an anti-SLAPP law in Wisconsin.
