South Korea remains polarised a year after failed martial law attempt
Update: 2025-12-03
Description
South Korea marks one year since former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s brief martial law decree, which lasted less than seven hours but triggered impeachment and a snap election. President Lee Jae Myung says the country has recovered through a “Revolution of Light”. Opponents of martial law held candlelight vigils calling for unresolved issues to be addressed. Analysts say political divisions persist, with one side demanding an “end to insurrection” and the other calling for “Yoon Again”. Yoon’s supporters continue rallies blaming repeated impeachments for the crisis. Yoon and former officials remain on trial over their alleged roles in attempting to impose martial law. His former party has issued an apology, with some members cutting ties with him. Al Jazeera’s Jack Barton reports from Seoul.
