TURNING OFF NOTIFICATIONS FOR EVEN ONE DAY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE _ Can you imagine turning off all of your phone’s notifications, even just for a day? Researchers (with Telefonica and Carnegie Mellon University) got people to turn off their notifications for 24 hours. Unsurprisingly, those taking part ended up a more productive, less stressed, and less distracted than they otherwise would have been.

PET PARENTS REVEAL THEY BAIL ON SOCIAL PLANS TO STAY HOME WITH THEIR FURRY FRIENDS _ If you’ve ever cancelled plans to stay home with your pet, you are not alone, according to a new survey of 2,000 cat and dog owners. The survey found that nearly half of pet parents (48%) have bailed on plans with friends or family to spend time with their pets, doing so an average of five times during their pet’s life. Surprisingly, 30 percent have even called out of work to stay home with their furry companion, resulting in four pet-related sick days on average.

Best Things to Buy in the month of October

Fall is in full swing, which means you’re thinking about keeping your house nice and toasty as the temperatures drop. The Holidays are quickly approaching. October is the best time to save on new thermostats, smoke detectors and cookware. And if you’re an adventurer, October can also be the best time to buy an RV. Looking to move? October is the start of a three-month stretch for the best time to buy a house.

Cookware: Industry experts say that they see the best deals in October when people are looking to upgrade their kitchens prior to holidays and entertaining.

Smoke detectors: Not replacing your old smoke detectors is one of the many little things that could be making your home a fire hazard. Fortunately, they tend to go on sale this month. These First Alert hardwired smoke detectors are good for 10 years and can be purchased in packs of one, three, six or 12.

Thermostats: If it’s time to upgrade your thermostat, you can snag one at a discount during Columbus Day sales. A smart thermostat like the Google Nest can help you save money and conserve energy in the upcoming winter months.

RVs: Demand for RVs is highest in the spring and summer months, so you’ll get the best prices during the fall and winter. But if you want low prices and a good selection, October is the best time to shop.
